Polycheles*, gen. nov. Shell fragile, structureless; lucid spots ten to<br />

twelve, arranged <strong>in</strong> a subradiate manner. Right valve much larger. Superior<br />

antenna? 6-, <strong>in</strong>ferior 4-jo<strong>in</strong>ted, and bear<strong>in</strong>g strong term<strong>in</strong>al claws. First<br />

maxilla furnished with eight long and strong curved seta?, and with a long<br />

biarticulate digit, which term<strong>in</strong>ates <strong>in</strong> four curved claws. Third pair of feet<br />

much <strong>the</strong> longest, armed with two strong curved claws and one shorter seta.<br />

F. PLATEAU gives several physiological observations and experiments<br />

concern<strong>in</strong>g this family, and especially Cyclops<strong>in</strong>e<br />

castor (Jur<strong>in</strong>e), hav<strong>in</strong>g employed Ehrenberg's carm<strong>in</strong>e process.<br />

Each eye has its proper optic ganglion. The heart, <strong>the</strong> genital<br />

orifices, and <strong>the</strong> glands by which <strong>the</strong> ovisac is formed are described.<br />

Electrical discharges of moderate <strong>in</strong>tensity do not kill<br />

<strong>the</strong> animal, but make it motionless for some time. Cyclops<br />

quadricornis (Miill.) dies <strong>in</strong> sea-water after a few m<strong>in</strong>utes,<br />
