In an appendix to this family <strong>the</strong> author treats of <strong>the</strong> Leptocephaiidee.<br />

He dist<strong>in</strong>guishes between really Leptocephal<strong>in</strong>e forms<br />

and such as have been very improperly referred to <strong>the</strong> same<br />

group. He is <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed to regard <strong>the</strong> former as <strong>the</strong> offspr<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of Muraenoids, but as <strong>in</strong>dividuals arrested <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir development<br />

at a very early period of <strong>the</strong>ir life, yet cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g to grow to a<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> size without correspond<strong>in</strong>g development of <strong>the</strong>ir external<br />

organs, and perish<strong>in</strong>g without hav<strong>in</strong>g atta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> characters of<br />

<strong>the</strong> perfect animal. To this form belong all <strong>the</strong> various Leptocephali<br />

and Hyoprorus. Tilurus is a similar form arrested <strong>in</strong> its<br />

development, but cannot be <strong>the</strong> offspr<strong>in</strong>g of a Mursenoid fish.<br />

Stomiasunculus (Kaup) is <strong>the</strong> young of Stomias, Porobronchus<br />

(Kaup) <strong>the</strong> young of Fierasfer acus, and Esunculus (Kaup) probably<br />

that of Alepocephalus.<br />

Ophichthys serpens is described and figured as Ophisurus novce zelandice<br />

(sp. n.) by Dr. Hector, Tr. N. Z. Lust. ii. 1870, p. 34, pi 3. With anatomical<br />

notes by Knox.<br />

These fishes are not Lophobranchs; <strong>the</strong>y resemble, <strong>in</strong> several<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ts, even <strong>the</strong> Acanthopterygians; and Prof. Steenstrup places<br />

<strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong> Cataphracti. Gun<strong>the</strong>r, Fish. viii. p. 146.<br />

laternarius).<br />
