Pelagic mollusks, and especially Pteropods, often make <strong>the</strong>ir appearance <strong>in</strong><br />

places where <strong>the</strong>y have never been observed before or afterwards; so <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

gulf of Naples <strong>in</strong> 1864 Clionopsis krohnii, <strong>in</strong> 1865 Spiralis recurvirostra, <strong>in</strong><br />

1869 Ilyalcea <strong>in</strong>flexa and Creseis acicula. Costa, Ann. Mus. Nap. iii. 1869.<br />

Twenty-n<strong>in</strong>e species of Mediterranean Cephalopods are enumerated by<br />

Targioni-Tozzetti, Att. Soc. Ital. xii. pp. 587-598.<br />

A very poor list of mollusks found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Black Sea is given by F. Marcusen<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>-'Transactions' of <strong>the</strong> first meet<strong>in</strong>g of Russian naturalists at<br />

St. Petersburg, 1868, p. 178.<br />

3. Red Sea.<br />

Seventy-two species of sea-shells, collected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bays of Suez and Akaba,<br />

are enumerated by P. Fischer, who po<strong>in</strong>ts out that some of <strong>the</strong>m are identical<br />

with or very nearly allied to o<strong>the</strong>rs from <strong>the</strong> West Indies. J. de Conch.<br />

xviii. pp. 161-179. One only, Nassa gibbosula (L.), is said to occur also<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean. [See below, p. 134.]<br />

A large number of sea-shells, collected by Mr. M'Andrew <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Red Sea<br />

are enumerated (Ann. N. H. (4) vi. pp. 429-450), among which are 355<br />

not conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Issel's work; <strong>the</strong> new species among <strong>the</strong>m are described<br />

by H. Adams, 1. c. pp. 121-129, and P. Z. S. 1870, pp. 5-7, pi 1. figs. 1-11,<br />

and pp. 788-793, pi. 48. figs. 1-19.<br />

A list of 128 species of sea-shells collected <strong>in</strong> Annesley Bay, and n<strong>in</strong>e<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> open sea off <strong>the</strong> south-east coast of Arabia, is given<br />

by W. T. Blanford, Obs. Geol and Zool. Abyss, pp. 462-471.<br />

4. Seas of India and Tropical Polynesia.<br />

Scattered descriptions of apparently new species occur <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> various periodicals,<br />

but no paper treat<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong>m separately.<br />

5. Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Pacific.<br />

A. ADAMS gives a list of 87 species of Proboscidiferous Mollusks <strong>in</strong>habit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> seas of Japan. Besides 9 new ones and a large number of tropical<br />

Indian species, <strong>the</strong>re are some well-known European forms among <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

as Buce<strong>in</strong>um undatum, L., Gulf of Tartary; B. glaciate, L., Saghalien;<br />

Purpura hcemastima (L.), Hakodadi; P. lapillus (L.), Hakodadi and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

localities; Nassa mutabilis (L.), Takanosima and Mososeki; <strong>the</strong> last is <strong>the</strong><br />

most remarkable, as <strong>in</strong> Europe it is conf<strong>in</strong>ed to <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean. The<br />

genus Leptoconchus is here first <strong>in</strong>dicated from Japan <strong>in</strong> Madrepores at K<strong>in</strong>o-<br />

O-Sima. Ann. N. H. (4) v. pp. 418-430.<br />

The shells of Monterey are enumerated by J. G. Cooper; 206 species are<br />

named, 126 of <strong>the</strong>m have heen first observed on <strong>the</strong> shore, 80 first found by<br />

dredg<strong>in</strong>g. Am. J. Conch, vi. pp. 42-70.<br />

The species of Patella and allied genera occurr<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> West Coast are<br />

treated by Dall, Am. J. Conch, vi. pp. 227-282.<br />

Several sea-shells from La Paz, California, collected by J. Pedersen, are<br />

described and o<strong>the</strong>rs mentioned by A. E. Verrill Am. J. Sc. xix. pp. 217-<br />
