IN reply to Prof. Huxley's paper on <strong>the</strong> homologies of <strong>the</strong> auditory<br />

ossicles (see Zool. Record, vi. p. 108), Prof. PETERS has reexam<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>the</strong> auditory ossicles and <strong>the</strong> pneumatic duct of <strong>the</strong><br />

mandible <strong>in</strong> Crocodiles. The latter forms a direct communication<br />

between <strong>the</strong> articulary and tympanic cavity. MB. Ak. Berl.<br />

Abyss<strong>in</strong>ia. Mr. BLANFORD's work, ' Observations on <strong>the</strong><br />

Zoology and Geology of Abyss<strong>in</strong>ia/ has been noticed above<br />

(p. 3). In <strong>the</strong> part " Reptilia " (pp. 444-459) two Tortoises,<br />

13 Lizards, 7 Snakes, and 5 Frogs are referred to. Several of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Lizards are described as new.<br />

Senegambia. Dr. STEINDACHNER gives an account of <strong>the</strong><br />

Reptiles collected by him <strong>in</strong> this country. SB. Ak. "Wien, 1870,<br />

lxii. pp. 326-335. Twenty-seven species.<br />

South Africa. PETERS reports on a collection made at<br />

Hantam (Oorlogsrevier, S.W. Africa). MB. Ak. Berl<strong>in</strong>,<br />

Frogs.<br />

Round Island. Sir H. BARELY, whilst Governor of <strong>the</strong> Mauritius,<br />

took steps for <strong>the</strong> thorough exam<strong>in</strong>ation of this remarkable<br />

islet. He has given a report <strong>in</strong> a pamphlet, ' Notes on<br />

<strong>the</strong> Flora and Fauna of Round Island/ taken from <strong>the</strong> 'Mauritius<br />

Almanac and Register' for 1870. Mauritius, 1870, 8vo, pp. 15.<br />

It conta<strong>in</strong>s a description of <strong>the</strong> physical features of <strong>the</strong> island,<br />

and of <strong>the</strong> collections made by <strong>the</strong> explor<strong>in</strong>g parties. [The Reptiles<br />

were sent to <strong>the</strong> Recorder for exam<strong>in</strong>ation, and proved to<br />

consist of f<strong>in</strong>e series of Thyrus boyerii (Desj.), Leiolepisma bellii<br />
