Set<strong>in</strong>a. Speyer has published some very <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g remarks on this genus,<br />

with special reference to S. aurita and ramosa, which he considers to be<br />

almost, but not entirely, perfectly developed species. The three species<br />

which he considers <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> stems of <strong>the</strong> genus are irrorella (with freyeri<br />

and andereggii), roseida (with kuhlwe<strong>in</strong>ii, alpestris, melanomos, wAfiavicans),<br />

and aurita (with ramosa).<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g changes take place <strong>in</strong> Set<strong>in</strong>a ramosa at a considerable altitude<br />

more matted, from <strong>the</strong> hair becom<strong>in</strong>g longer and thicker; 3, <strong>in</strong> proportion<br />

to <strong>the</strong> thicken<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> cover<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> body, <strong>the</strong> thickness of <strong>the</strong> scal<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

<strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>gs dim<strong>in</strong>ishes; 4, <strong>the</strong> colour is generally paler; 5, <strong>the</strong> black mark<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

are usually more extended; 6, <strong>the</strong> shape of <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>gs is altered.<br />

Correspond<strong>in</strong>g changes take place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>-forms of various species,<br />

while o<strong>the</strong>r species are unaffected by <strong>the</strong> altitude. In conclusion, Speyer<br />

attempts to expla<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> object of <strong>the</strong>se modifications <strong>in</strong> moimta<strong>in</strong>-<strong>in</strong>sects,<br />
