GODMAN (Nat. Hist, of Azores, pp. 101-106) gives a list of <strong>the</strong> Lepidoptera<br />

found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se islands, 28 <strong>in</strong> number. Several even of this small number<br />

appear to have been <strong>in</strong>troduced; and all, with two exceptions, are well-known<br />

British species.<br />

C. S. GREGSON publishes remarks on occasional second broods <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong>glebrooded<br />

Lepidoptera. Ent. M. M. vii. pp. 18, 19.<br />

LABOULBENE has published an article on " Lepidopteres " <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 'Dictionnaire<br />

Encyclope'dique des Sciences Me'dicales.' Accord<strong>in</strong>g to a notice <strong>in</strong><br />

Ann. Soc. Ent. Fr., Stances, 1870, p. 53, it conta<strong>in</strong>s a brief sketch of <strong>the</strong><br />

natural and medical history of <strong>the</strong> order, remarks on so-called showers of<br />

blood, and a valuable bibliography.<br />

NATHUsrus publishes some microscopical observations on <strong>the</strong> development<br />

of <strong>the</strong> eggs <strong>in</strong> Abraxas grossulariata, Pieris rapce or napi, and Vanessa urticce.<br />

RILEY'S second report on <strong>the</strong> noxious Insects of Missouri is reviewed, and<br />

several of <strong>the</strong> illustrations of Lepidoptera are reproduced <strong>in</strong> Amer. Nat. iv.<br />

SNELLEN VAN VOLLENHOVEN (Tijd. Ent. (2) v. pi. 6) figures varieties<br />

of Deilephila porcellus, Psilura monacha, Amphidasis betularia, Argynnis selene,<br />

Sciaphila ictericana, Lithosia rosea.<br />

STAINTON has published a list of all <strong>the</strong> new British Lepidoptera noticed<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 'Entomologist's Annual' from 1851 to 1871. 222 species of Heterocera<br />

are recorded. Ent. Ann. 1871, pp. 108-116.<br />

STAUDINGER advocates careful comparative descriptions of new Lepidoptera<br />

with <strong>the</strong> allied species. B. E. Z. 1870, p. 97.<br />

WALLACE (Contributions to <strong>the</strong> Theory of Natural Selection, pp. 45-129)<br />

has repr<strong>in</strong>ted, with additions, his essay on " Mimicry and o<strong>the</strong>r Protective<br />

Resemblances among Animals," which conta<strong>in</strong>s much matter relat<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

Lepidoptera.<br />

J. JENNER WEIR has published some additional notes on <strong>the</strong> relation<br />

between <strong>the</strong> colour and <strong>the</strong> edibility of Lepidoptera and <strong>the</strong>ir larvae, and<br />

suggests that <strong>the</strong> comparative abundance or scarcity of an <strong>in</strong>sect may sometimes<br />

be due to <strong>the</strong> presence or absence of some particular bird that feeds<br />

upon it. Tr. E. Soc. 1870, pp. 337-339.<br />

ZELLER (Tijdschr. Ent. (2) v. pp. 229-262) has published a paper on<br />

<strong>the</strong> Lepidoptera of North-eastern Germany which appear towards <strong>the</strong> close<br />

of <strong>the</strong> year. He divides <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to hybernat<strong>in</strong>g species, late-appear<strong>in</strong>g species,<br />

hybernat<strong>in</strong>g late appear<strong>in</strong>g species, and accidental stragglers, and enumerates<br />

<strong>the</strong> species under each head<strong>in</strong>g, often with lengthy notices of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

larvae and ord<strong>in</strong>ary times of appearance. Only a small portion of <strong>the</strong> paper<br />

has yet appeared.<br />

A series of articles on <strong>in</strong>sects <strong>in</strong>jurious to <strong>the</strong> v<strong>in</strong>e has been published <strong>in</strong><br />

Amer. Ent. ii., commenc<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> Lepidoptera, which are very fully<br />

figured <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong>ir stages. These articles will be referred to under <strong>the</strong><br />

names of <strong>the</strong> species noticed.<br />
