Geographical Distribution,<br />

VERRILL (Tr. Conn. Ac. i. p. 503) gives a table of <strong>the</strong> geographical distribution<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Polyps of <strong>the</strong> West Coast of America, arranged accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />

same prov<strong>in</strong>ces or topographical regions as those already Used by <strong>the</strong> same<br />

author <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case of <strong>the</strong> Ech<strong>in</strong>odermata. 1. The Arctic prov<strong>in</strong>ce has yielded<br />

4 species, also found on <strong>the</strong> Atlantic coasts of America and Europe. 2.<br />

The Sitchian [!] prov. 2 sp. 3. The Oregonian prov. 7 sp., of which 3 are peculiar<br />

to it. 4. The Californian prov. 8 sp., of which 5 are peculiar to it, <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r 3 occurr<strong>in</strong>g also <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oregonian. 5. The Panamian [!] prov., <strong>the</strong> richest<br />

of all, has yielded 116 sp., of which 104 are peculiar to it: this region is subdivisible<br />

<strong>in</strong>to 3 subprov<strong>in</strong>ces,—A. Mexican, conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 42 sp., of which 20 are<br />

peculiar, 16 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Panamian (proper), and 6 are common to all three subdivisions<br />

; B. Panamian (proper), conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 80 sp., of which 51 are peculiar,<br />

16 occur also <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mexican subprov<strong>in</strong>ce, and 7 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ecuadorian; C.<br />

Equadorian, compris<strong>in</strong>g 17 sp., of which 4 are peculiar, 7 are common to it<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Panaman, and 6 are found <strong>in</strong> all three. 6. The Peruvian prov. has<br />

vielded 15 sp., all peculiar to it but one (Bunodes papillosa). 7. The Chilian<br />

prov. 11 sp., all peculiar to it but <strong>the</strong> above-cited B. papillosa, common to it<br />

With <strong>the</strong> Peruvian. 8, The Fuegian, 6 sp., all peculiar to <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce. The<br />

Panaman prov<strong>in</strong>ce is very rich <strong>in</strong> Madreporaria and Alcyoniaria. There are<br />

no Madreporaria recorded from <strong>the</strong> Arctic or Sitkhan prov<strong>in</strong>ces; but 2<br />

(Balanophyllia elegans, Verr., and Allopora venusta, Yen:) occur <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oregonian<br />

; one Astrangia is recorded from <strong>the</strong> Straits of Magellan.<br />

DUCHASSAING (I. c, p. 8) asserts that <strong>the</strong> types of Act<strong>in</strong>ozoa dom<strong>in</strong>ant <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Caribbean Sea are Zoantharia malacodermata, Astraida, and especially<br />

Gorgonida, but that <strong>the</strong> fauna of this sea is dist<strong>in</strong>guished by a characteristic<br />

and almost complete absence of Styl<strong>in</strong>acea and Fungida.<br />

Only Alcyonium digitatum, L., Pennatulaphosphorea, h., Act<strong>in</strong>oloba dianthus,<br />

Sagartia viduata, Miill, and Tealia crassicornis, Miill., occur <strong>in</strong> Metzger's list of<br />

Act<strong>in</strong>ozoa from <strong>the</strong> East-Frisian coast. JB. Ges. Hann. 1869-70.<br />

Alcyoniidcs.<br />

Gymnosarca, g. n., Kent (Q. J. Micr, Sc. x. p. 397). Corallum firm,<br />

smooth, attached by its base and partially <strong>in</strong>crust<strong>in</strong>g, throw<strong>in</strong>g off free cyl<strong>in</strong>drical<br />

stolons which occasionally branch and coalesce. Polype-cells elevated,<br />

cyl<strong>in</strong>drical. Animals semiretractile. G. bathybius, Cezimbra, Portugal.<br />
