The fourth edition of I. LEA'S synopsis of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Uni</strong>onidse conta<strong>in</strong>s,<br />

after a previous discussion on <strong>the</strong> best systematic arrangement<br />

of <strong>the</strong> genera and species, a list of all known species, with<br />

full synonymy and numerous annotations; fur<strong>the</strong>r, a table of<br />

geographical distribution, an <strong>in</strong>dex of all <strong>the</strong> names of species,<br />

with statement where <strong>the</strong>y have been published, and an extended<br />

list of books and papers referr<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> subject. The author<br />

admits 1069 known species, and gives besides a list of 224<br />

doubtful ones.<br />

Dr. F. C. NOLL, who has made <strong>the</strong> curious observation that<br />

with<strong>in</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g specimens of <strong>Uni</strong>o and Anodonta <strong>the</strong> eggs of a<br />

Cypr<strong>in</strong>oid fish, Rhodeus amarus, are deposited and <strong>the</strong> young<br />

fishes developed (Zool. Gart. 1869, pp. 257-265, pi. 1; see Zool.<br />

Rec. vi. p. 136), adds several particulars concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> development<br />

of <strong>the</strong> eggs of <strong>the</strong> mollusk itself, and some o<strong>the</strong>r animals<br />

<strong>in</strong>fest<strong>in</strong>g it (as Alcyonella). Zool. Gart. 1870, pp. 169-172.<br />

Dr. SCHOTT confirms <strong>the</strong>se, ibid. pp. 237, 238. He also describes<br />

<strong>the</strong> life and development, <strong>the</strong> parasites and o<strong>the</strong>r enemies &c.<br />
