SAUSSURE (Melanges Orthopterologiques) gives a monograph of <strong>the</strong> Old-<br />

World species of this family, <strong>in</strong> amplification of his previous paper <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Mitth. schw. ent. Ges. After prefac<strong>in</strong>g his memoir by considerations of <strong>the</strong><br />

characters, he gives <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g table as an outl<strong>in</strong>e of his system:—<br />

A. Corpus et pedes non appendiculata. Antennae <strong>in</strong> utroque sexu simplices,<br />

setaceae vel pilosellae. (Pedes simplices scilicet teretes vel unicar<strong>in</strong>ati,<br />

nee lobati, nee cristati. Vertex non conoideo-productus. Abdom<strong>in</strong>is<br />

thoracisque marg<strong>in</strong>es non lobati, genere Gonatisto excepto. Elytra<br />

simplicia, marg<strong>in</strong>ibus <strong>in</strong>tegris.) NUDTPEDES.<br />

a. Prothorax supra coxas antice dilatationem nullam efficiens, sed marg<strong>in</strong>ibus<br />

parallelis, vel caput versus latius marg<strong>in</strong>ibus subflexuosis.<br />

LOBIPEDES.<br />

a. Antennae <strong>in</strong> utroque sexu simplices, setaceae Harpagii.<br />

b. Antennae plerumque <strong>in</strong> maribus pect<strong>in</strong>atae vel serratae; pedes plerumque<br />

multicar<strong>in</strong>ati Empusii.<br />

On his three plates he figures numerous species, ei<strong>the</strong>r entirely or with<br />

regard to special characters. The New-World species are to be worked out<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> " Mission scientifique au Mexique et dans l'Amerique centrale," <strong>the</strong><br />

pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g of which work was stopped for a time by <strong>the</strong> events of <strong>the</strong> war.<br />

Empusa brachyptera. Makl<strong>in</strong> (CEfv. F<strong>in</strong>. Soc. 1870, pp. 35, 36) notices<br />

<strong>the</strong> occurrence of this species <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>land.<br />

New genera :—<br />

Parablepharis, Saussure, Mitth. schw. ent. Ges. iii. p. 222. Differs from<br />

Phyllocrania <strong>in</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> horn of <strong>the</strong> vertex short, pyramidal, and nearly<br />

divided at <strong>the</strong> apex. Type P. kuhlii, De Haan.<br />

Paraoxypilus, Saussure, I. c. p. 224. (Subtribe Mantites.) Supraanal<br />

lam<strong>in</strong>a elongate; head and thorax with sp<strong>in</strong>es; marg<strong>in</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> abdomen<br />

dilated; female apterous. Two new species, noticed below.<br />

Miomantis, Saussure, I. e. p. 225. Allied to Miopteryx. Sexes unequal;<br />

elytra of <strong>the</strong> female equall<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> abdomen, opaque; those of <strong>the</strong> male long<br />

and membranaceous. Type M. forficata, Stoll.<br />

Pseudomiopteryx, Saussure, I. c. Allied to Miopteryx. Body somewhat<br />

short; front mucronate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ferior ocellus. Two new<br />

species, noticed below.<br />
