Noctuiclcc as far as <strong>the</strong> genus Mesogona. A few pages of general remarks on<br />

<strong>the</strong> family are prefixed to <strong>the</strong> book.<br />

A long article on <strong>the</strong> " Cotton Army-worm," Noctua (Anomis) xyl<strong>in</strong>a,<br />

Say, is published <strong>in</strong> Amer. Ent. i. pp. 207-209; see also p. 342. In <strong>the</strong><br />

same paper <strong>the</strong> " Boll- worm" (Heliothis armiyera) and <strong>the</strong> "true Armyworm<br />

" (Leucania unipunctata, Haw.) are noticed. The three species are<br />

described and figured <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong>ir stages, and full details are given as to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

habits and <strong>the</strong> means employed to destroy <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

F. BUCHANAN WHITE records Leucania littoralis and Heliothis marg<strong>in</strong>ata<br />

as new to Scotland. Ent. M. M. vi. p. 190.<br />

MAASSEN (S. E. Z. 1870, pp. 329-333) publishes full directions for collect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at sugar, and adds a list of nearly 60 species of Noctua collected by him<br />

from August 20th to tho middle of October, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood of Elberfeld.<br />

The species are nearly all British [cf. Weymer, ibid. p. 398].<br />

G. NORMAN has noticed Noctua baja and Leucania pallens <strong>in</strong> cop. at sugar.<br />

RNAGGS suggests that <strong>the</strong> genus Aventia should follow Toxocampa. Cab.<br />
