Diptilon, g. n. Prittwitz, S. E. Z. 1870, p. 349. Allied to Hamaterion. Head<br />

of moderate size, round; palpi slender, tip po<strong>in</strong>ted, somewhat curved outwards,<br />

nearly naked, reach<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> forehead; antennae with two rows of<br />

pect<strong>in</strong>ations not extend<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> tips, longest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle. Thorax moderately<br />

stout. Abdomen with 6-7 segments; segment 3 strongly constricted,<br />

last segment with a short tuft. Legs imperfect, those present without spurs.<br />

Fore w<strong>in</strong>gs form<strong>in</strong>g a half-circle. Cell la strongly rounded towards <strong>the</strong> body.<br />

H<strong>in</strong>d w<strong>in</strong>gs reduced to simple rudiments, not extend<strong>in</strong>g beyond segment<br />

3 or 4; coarsely scaled; sickle-shaped towards <strong>the</strong> abdomen, rest<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>wardly curved po<strong>in</strong>t: some coarse moderately long bristles on <strong>the</strong> edges<br />

Earias <strong>in</strong>sulana, Boisd. Rogenhofer (Verh. z.-b. Wien, xx. pp. 869-874)<br />

describes <strong>the</strong> transformations of this species, and gives siliquana, rI.-S.,frmdosana,W&]k.,<br />

and gossypii, PFrauenfeld, as synonyms; chlorion, Ramb., and<br />

fulvidana, Wallengr., are varieties. The species occurs <strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>, Crete,<br />

Sicily (?), Syria, Egypt, Madagascar, Mauritius, Bourbon, South and East<br />

Africa, North and South India, Java, Fiji.<br />
