This important work, extensive as it is, does not profess to be an exhaustive<br />

monograph of <strong>the</strong> subject. It deals almost exclusively with <strong>the</strong><br />

siliceous sponges, Hackel be<strong>in</strong>g, as is well known, at present occupied with<br />

a special monograph of <strong>the</strong> calcareous forms. It comprises:—I. Considerations<br />

relative to classification, viz.:—a, typical forms and variability of <strong>the</strong><br />

spicules ; b, <strong>the</strong> fibrous networks and arrangement of <strong>the</strong> hard parts; c, analogical<br />

and homological structures. II Special description of <strong>the</strong> sponges<br />

occurr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region of observation, many of which are only noticed<br />

generically. To this part is appended a table of comparison between Bowerbank's<br />

British species (siliceous and horny) and those of <strong>the</strong> author. III.<br />

Results relative to geographical distribution and to classification. A table<br />

of geographical distribution is given, as likewise an embodiment of <strong>the</strong><br />

author's ideas as to <strong>the</strong> natural classification of sponges, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form of a<br />

genealogical tree of <strong>the</strong> various families.<br />
