Abyss<strong>in</strong>ia. Mr. W. T. BLANFORD, <strong>the</strong> geologist of <strong>the</strong> British<br />

expedition <strong>in</strong> 1867-68, has published his ' Observations on <strong>the</strong><br />

Geology and Zoology of Abyss<strong>in</strong>ia/ London: 1870, 8vo,<br />

pp. 487, plates. The work is divided <strong>in</strong>to three parts :—<br />

1. Personal Narrative, pp. 1-139. 2. Geology, pp. 143-203.<br />

3. Zoology, pp. 207-477. In <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction to <strong>the</strong> last part<br />

he reviews <strong>the</strong> previous literature on <strong>the</strong> subject, and divides<br />

<strong>the</strong> country hypsometrically <strong>in</strong>to four regions, add<strong>in</strong>g lists of<br />

<strong>the</strong> animals with <strong>in</strong>dication of <strong>the</strong> altitudes at which he has<br />

observed <strong>the</strong>m. In <strong>the</strong> account of <strong>the</strong> Mammalia (pp. 222-284)<br />

37 species are referred to, <strong>the</strong> more important of which will be<br />

mentioned subsequently.<br />

Prof. PETERS gives a list of 14 Mammals collected by Dr.<br />

Schimper <strong>in</strong> Abyss<strong>in</strong>ia, with some notes on <strong>the</strong>ir habits and<br />

West Africa. Prof. PETERS enumerates 14 Bats and 12<br />

Rodents from <strong>the</strong> Portuguese possessions <strong>in</strong> West Africa. Jorn.<br />

South America. JIMENEZ DE LA ESPADA, a member of <strong>the</strong><br />

Spanish expedition to explore <strong>the</strong> natural productions and physical<br />

conditions of South America, has published <strong>in</strong> a separate<br />

form (from <strong>the</strong> 'Bolet<strong>in</strong> revista de la <strong>Uni</strong>versidad de Madrid''),<br />

"Algunos datos nuevos 6 curiosos acerca de la Fauna del alto<br />

Amazonas (Mamiferos)," Madrid : 1870, 8vo, pp. 27. In this<br />

pamphlet he makes some general remarks on <strong>the</strong> objects of <strong>the</strong><br />

expedition, describes two new Monkeys, and treats of <strong>the</strong> suck<strong>in</strong>gcups<br />

on <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>gs of Thyroptera.<br />

New Zealand. A "List of <strong>the</strong> bones of Seals and Whales<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Colonial Museum, Well<strong>in</strong>gton, New Zealand," drawn up<br />

by Dr. JAMES HECTOR, is published, with notes, by Dr. GRAY, <strong>in</strong><br />

Ann. & Mag. N. H. 1870, v. pp. 220-224. It refers to two<br />

Seals and five Cetaceans.<br />
