Otidiphaps is a remarkable new genus, <strong>in</strong> general coloration call<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Didunculus to m<strong>in</strong>d, but with a more normally columbiform bill and longer<br />

legs. The type is<br />

A very complete monograph of <strong>the</strong> family. After some <strong>in</strong>troductory remarks<br />

and a history of <strong>the</strong> group, show<strong>in</strong>g how <strong>the</strong> knowledge of it has<br />

gradually extended, <strong>the</strong>re follows a diagnostic synopsis of <strong>the</strong> 52 species (one<br />

of which is new) arranged <strong>in</strong> three subfamilies—Crac<strong>in</strong>ce (with four genera),<br />

Pene/opiiice (with seven genera, one of which is new), and Oreophas<strong>in</strong>ce (with<br />

one genus), some remarkable identifications of species hi<strong>the</strong>rto regarded as<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>ct be<strong>in</strong>g made. An account of <strong>the</strong> geographical distribution of <strong>the</strong><br />

family, compendiously shown <strong>in</strong> a table, ends this excellent paper.<br />

Stegnolcema is <strong>the</strong> new genus just mentioned, resembl<strong>in</strong>g Penelope, but with<br />

a bare space on <strong>the</strong> lower part of <strong>the</strong> throat only. The type is Ortalidu<br />

montagnii, Bp. lid. ut supra, p. 521.<br />

Ortalida ruficrissa, sp. n., from New Granada, resembl<strong>in</strong>g O. vet.ula, but<br />

with a rufous vent and broad white tips to <strong>the</strong> rectrices. lid. ut supra, p. 538.<br />

Penelope ochrogaster is a new species from Brazil resembl<strong>in</strong>g P. pileata, but<br />

with a rufous head and scarcely chestnut h<strong>in</strong>d neck. A. von Pelzeln, Orn.<br />
