The arrangement of this family be<strong>in</strong>g still <strong>in</strong> a very unsettled state, <strong>the</strong><br />

Recorder has thought it best to follow <strong>the</strong> subfamilies marked out <strong>in</strong> Sch<strong>in</strong>er's<br />

Catalogue of European Diptera. The only alterations adopted are a reversal<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir order, as agreed to by Sch<strong>in</strong>er himself <strong>in</strong> Verh. z.-b. Wien, xviii.;<br />

and for temporary convenience <strong>the</strong> Ortal<strong>in</strong>a <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> genera arranged<br />

under that family by Loew.<br />

It will be most convenient to notice here two <strong>in</strong>sects described by Loew<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1870, of which <strong>the</strong> Recorder has not seen <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al descriptions; and<br />

as <strong>the</strong> genera appear to be new, he cannot refer <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong>ir proper subfamilies.<br />

They are described <strong>in</strong> Loew's paper on Diptera from Turkestan <strong>in</strong><br />

Nachr. Ges. Mose, and are<br />
