RIDDELL Baron Riddell. Sir George Allardice Riddell, 1 st and last Baron Riddell, <strong>of</strong> Walton Heath, newspaper proprietor, (1865-<br />
1934), was son <strong>of</strong> James Riddell <strong>of</strong> Duns, Berwickshire, (d.1867).<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Per chevron Azure and Gules in chief two ears <strong>of</strong> rye leaved and slipped and in base an ancient printing press Or.<br />
Crest: Issuant out <strong>of</strong> a bank <strong>of</strong> clouds a carrier pigeon volant holding in the beak an open scroll all Proper.<br />
Supporters: On either side a printer <strong>of</strong> the time <strong>of</strong> Caxton Proper.<br />
Badge: An ear <strong>of</strong> rye leaved and slipped and enfiled by a circlet Or.<br />

RIDLEY Henry Nicholas Ridley, CMG, MA (Oxon), FRS, FLS, FRHS, <strong>of</strong> 7 Cumberland Road, Kew, (1855-1956), Director <strong>of</strong><br />
Gardens and Forests, Straits Settlements, 1889-1912, was 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Oliver Matthew Ridley, MA (Oxon), (1824-1907), and descended<br />
from Sir Matthew White Ridley, 2 nd Bart., (1745-1813).<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules on a chevron Argent between three falcons belled Proper as many pellets.<br />
Crest: A bull passant the tail turned over the back Gules.<br />

RIPLEY Sir Hugh Ripley, 4 th Bart., <strong>of</strong> The House in the Wood, Wentworth, (b.1916), succeeded his father Sir Henry William Alfred<br />
Ripley, 3 rd Bart., <strong>of</strong> Rawdon, Yorkshire, on the latter's death, 1956.<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Per chevron nebuly Or and Vert a cross crosslet between two lions rampant in chief and a lion rampant between two cross<br />
crosslets in base all counterchanged.<br />
Crest: A demi lion reguardant Vert gorged with a collar gemel and charged on the body with a cross crosslet Or holding between<br />
the paws an escutcheon Argent charged with a cock Proper.<br />

RITCHIE Major Ian Charles Ritchie, RA, <strong>of</strong> Highway House, Hog's Back, Seale, {Farnham}, (b.1908), elder son <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant-<br />
Colonel Harold Ritchie, DSO, (1876-1918), and grandson <strong>of</strong> the 1 st Baron Ritchie <strong>of</strong> Dundee, (1838-1906).<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent an anchor erect Sable on a chief <strong>of</strong> the last three lions' heads <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />
Crest: Out <strong>of</strong> an antique crown Or an unicorn's head Argent armed Gold and charged on the neck with an anchor as in the arms.<br />

RIVETT-CARNAC Sir James Henry Sproule Rivett-Carnac, 3 rd Bart., (1846-1909), was <strong>of</strong> Riverdene, Weybridge. His kinsman the<br />
Rev. Sir George Clennell Rivett-Carnac, 6 th Bart., BA (Cantab), (1850-1932) was Rector <strong>of</strong> Woldingham.<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Quarterly, Argent and Azure two swords in saltire Proper between three mullets one in chief and two in<br />
fess and a crescent in base counterchanged (Carnac); 2 and 3, Per pale Argent and Sable on a chevron between three lozenges as many martlets<br />
counterchanged (Rivett).<br />
Crests: 1, A sword erect Proper pommel and hilt Or issuing from a crescent Ermine the internal part Gules (Carnac); 2, An arm erect<br />
couped at the elbow per pale Argent and Sable in the hand Proper a broken sword <strong>of</strong> the first hilt and pommel Gold (Rivett).<br />

ROBARTS The early 19 th century bookplate <strong>of</strong> Abraham Wildey Robarts <strong>of</strong> Roehampton, displays the following;<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Azure three cross bows Argent; 2 and 3, Azure a chevron Ermine between three martlets Argent; the<br />
whole impaling, Gules a fess Vair between three unicorns statant Argent (Wilkinson).<br />
Crest: A stag lodged reguardant.<br />
