SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

STAPLES Roger Staples <strong>of</strong> The Close, Salisbury, {Wiltshire},(1694-1745), had issue, amongst others, an eldest son Roger Staples, JP,<br />

<strong>of</strong> Mitcham Hall, a London banker, (dsp. 1778), and a 2 nd son Charles Staples <strong>of</strong> London, (b.1728), who was father <strong>of</strong>, amongst others, Moses<br />

William Staples, <strong>of</strong> Norwood, banker and alderman <strong>of</strong> London, (1762-1802). His son, Moses William Staples <strong>of</strong> Norwood, and <strong>of</strong> Broughton<br />

Gifford, Wiltshire, (1786-1864), married, 1811, Anne, daughter <strong>of</strong> the Rev. William Frederick Browne <strong>of</strong> Launton, Oxfordshire, and coheir <strong>of</strong><br />

her brother Captain William Frederick Browne, <strong>of</strong> Launton and North Berwick. Their eldest son Richard Thomas Staples-Browne <strong>of</strong> Launton,<br />

(1814-55), assumed the additional name and arms <strong>of</strong> Browne on succeeding to Launton, 1842.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Ermine on a bend Azure between two fleurs-de-lys Gules three leopards' heads jessant-de-lys Or<br />

(Staples); 2 and 3, Sable a bend engrailed Ermine on a chief Argent an escallop Gules between two torteaux (Browne).<br />

Crests: 1, Out <strong>of</strong> a crown vallary Argent a lion's head affronté Gules semé-de-lys and ducally crowned Or (Staples); 2, An eagle<br />

displayed sable wings fretty resting each claw on a mullet Or (Browne).<br />

STAPLES Sir John Richard Staples, 14 th Bart., <strong>of</strong> Butter Hill House, South Street, Dorking, (b.1906), son <strong>of</strong> John Molesworth Staples,<br />

(1869-1948), and descended from Sir Robert Staples, 4 th Bart., <strong>of</strong> Lissan, Co. Tyrone, (d. 1714).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a fess engrailed Ermines between three hurts two dragons' heads erased Or.<br />

Crest: A demi negro affronté Proper holding a bolt-staple Or.<br />

Hill, DL, JP, <strong>of</strong> Dunstall Hall and Oxley Manor, Wolverhampton, {Staffordshire}, (1789-1872), by his wife Marina Ann, daughter <strong>of</strong> Luke<br />

Staveley <strong>of</strong> Hunmanby, Yorkshire.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a chevron between three lozenges Azure each charged with a cross crosslet fitché Or three wolves' heads erased <strong>of</strong><br />

the last.<br />

Crest: In front <strong>of</strong> a sheaf <strong>of</strong> six arrows points upwards Argent a bull's head cabossed Gules.<br />

STEINMAN Leonard Steinmann <strong>of</strong> St. Gall, Switzerland, (1718-79), settled at Clerkenwell, Middlesex, where he died. He had issue,<br />

amongst others, a son George Leonard Steinman <strong>of</strong> Croydon, (1758-1830), whose daughter and coheir Susannah Betty married, 1807, Robert<br />

Smith <strong>of</strong> Kingston, (d.1814). Their son George Steinmann Smith, post Steinman, FSA, <strong>of</strong> Priory Lodge, Peckham, (b.1811), assumed the<br />

surname Steinman in lieu <strong>of</strong> Smith 1832. (BLG1846)<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Azure an ibex rampant Argent horned Or (Steinmann); 2 and 3, . a stag's horn in pale . (Steinmann,<br />

ancient).<br />

Crest: A demi ibex Argent horned Or. (BGA)<br />

STENNING Philip Eustace Stenning <strong>of</strong> Limpsfield, (b.1874), son <strong>of</strong> Sir Alexander Rose Stenning, JP (Sussex), FSI, FRIBA, (1846-<br />

1928), and grandson <strong>of</strong> William Stenning <strong>of</strong> Godstone Court.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per fess Argent and Sable a pale and three bats, two and one, all counterchanged.<br />

Crest: A ram passant Gules armed and unguled Or resting the dexter forefoot on an escutcheon Argent charged with a bat Sable.<br />
