VILLIERS Baroness Nonsuch. Barbara Villiers, (c.1641-1709), daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> William Villiers, 2 nd Viscount Grandison,<br />

and mistress <strong>of</strong> King Charles II, was created Baroness Nonsuch, Countess <strong>of</strong> Southampton, and Duchess <strong>of</strong> Cleveland, 1670.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a cross Gules five escallops Or. (BGA)<br />

VILLIERS Commander George Dumba Villiers, RN, <strong>of</strong> Vane House, Warren Rise, New Malden, was son <strong>of</strong> Henry Montagu Hyde<br />

Villiers, MVO, <strong>of</strong> the Consular Service, (1863-1948), and descended from the Hon. Thomas Villiers, 1 st Earl <strong>of</strong> Clarendon, (d.1786). Of the<br />

same family, James Michael Hyde Villiers <strong>of</strong> Deepcut Place, Camberley, was 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Captain Eric Hyde Villiers, DSO, <strong>of</strong> Ormeley Lodge,<br />

Ham Common, (1881-1964), and descended from George William, 4 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Clarendon, (1800-70).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a cross Gules five escallop shells Or.<br />

Crest: A lion rampant Argent ducally crowned Or.<br />

VINCENT <strong>of</strong> Swinford, Leicestershire, from 1317, <strong>of</strong> Barnack, Northamptonshire, after 1400 and since 1595 <strong>of</strong> Stoke House in Stoke<br />

d'Abernon. This family resided at Debden Hall, Essex, during the greater part <strong>of</strong> last century but in 1934 returned to Stoke. Baronet, Jul 26, 1620.<br />

Since entering the peerage the family have dropped their ancient crest and motto, and now use:<br />

Crest: A figure representing the head <strong>of</strong> a Greek athlete, couped at the shoulders and bound around the temples with a fillet <strong>of</strong><br />

victory Argent.<br />

VINE Sir John Richard Somers Vine, CMG, FRGS, FSS, <strong>of</strong> Vernon House, Lordship Lane, Dulwich, (1847-1929), was Hon.<br />

Secretary <strong>of</strong> the National Leprosy Fund and one <strong>of</strong> HM's Lieutenants for the City <strong>of</strong> London. He was knighted 1886.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable three garbs Argent.<br />

Crest: Out <strong>of</strong> a ducal coronet Or an heraldic tiger's head Proper.<br />

VON DER MEDEN Otto von der Meden <strong>of</strong> Coventry Hall, Streatham, had a daughter Helena Wilhelmina who married, 1893, Sir<br />

Robert Stewart Johnstone, MA, LL.B (TCD), <strong>of</strong> 1a Queen's Gate, London, (1855-1936), Chief Justice <strong>of</strong> Grenada, 1909-14. (FD7)<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Rietstap gives for von der Meden <strong>of</strong> Bremen and Hamburg; Azure a fan Argent the handle in base.<br />

VON ERNSTHAUSEN Baron O. Ernst von Ernsthausen was <strong>of</strong> The Manor House, Ditton Hill, Long Ditton, in 1910. (VCHS iii 517)<br />
