POWELL <strong>of</strong> <strong>Surrey</strong>.<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a chevron Gules between three garbs Vert.<br />
Crest: A lion rampant Argent holding a garb Vert. (BGA)<br />
POWELL David Powell <strong>of</strong> Little St. Helens, London <strong>of</strong> Homerton, and <strong>of</strong> Horton Kirby, Kent, Treasurer <strong>of</strong> St. Luke's Hospital,<br />
London, (1725-1810), had issue, amongst others, a 3 rd son Baden <strong>of</strong> Langton and Speldhurst, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, (1767-1844), grandfather<br />
<strong>of</strong> the 1 st Baron Baden-Powell, qv, a 7 th son James Powell <strong>of</strong> Clapton House, Middlesex, (1774-1840). The latter's 2 nd son Arthur Powell <strong>of</strong><br />
Milton Heath, Dorking, (1812-94), Governor <strong>of</strong> St. Bartholomew's and Christ's Hospital, London, had issue, besides a 4 th son, Sir Francis, <strong>of</strong><br />
whom below, an eldest son Arthur Cr<strong>of</strong>ts Powell, JP, MA (Oxon), <strong>of</strong> Rose Hill, Dorking, (1844-1929), who was father <strong>of</strong> Arthur Marriott<br />
Powell, BA (Oxon), <strong>of</strong> Hawsted, Dorking, (b.1869). The said Admiral Sir Francis Powell, KCMG, CB, RN, (1849-1927), was father <strong>of</strong> Captain<br />
Frank Powell, RN, <strong>of</strong> Pine Tree, Thames Ditton, (b.1876).<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Per fess Or and Argent a lion rampant guardant Gules between two tilting spears erect Proper.<br />
Crest: A lion passant Or in the paw a broken titling spear in bend Proper pendent therefrom by a riband Gules an escutcheon resting<br />
on the wreath Sable charged with a pheon Or.<br />

POWER The Rev. Henry Bolton Power, MA, Vicar <strong>of</strong> Bramley, (1820-82), had a 3 rd son Kingsmill Henry Power <strong>of</strong> Sandpit Hall,<br />
Chobham, (1862-1937), father <strong>of</strong> Colonel Henry Ross Power, OBE, DL, IA, <strong>of</strong> Sandpit Hall, (1897-1963).<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules a sword in bend sinister Proper hilt and pommel Or the point elevated and blade encompassed with a laurel wreath <strong>of</strong><br />
the last on a chief Argent between two mullets Sable pierced <strong>of</strong> the field in the centre chief point pendent from a riband Gules fimbriated Azure a<br />
representation <strong>of</strong> the golden cross and clasp presented to Sir Manley Power for his services in the Peninsula.<br />
Crest: Issuant from a mural crown Or a stag's head Sable gorged with a laurel wreath and attired Gold.<br />

POWNEY Lieutenant-Colonel Cecil Du Pre Penton Powney, OBE, JP, Hampshire Regiment <strong>of</strong> Old Knightons, Dunsfold, High Sheriff<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Surrey</strong>, 1904, (b.1862), son <strong>of</strong> Edward Penton Powney, Madras Civil Service, Judge <strong>of</strong> the Supreme Court <strong>of</strong> Madras.<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable a fess cottised and couped between five mascles four in chief and one in base all Argent.<br />
Crest: In front <strong>of</strong> a demi eagle displayed Sable holding in the beak a mascle Argent three mascles interlaced fesswise also Argent.<br />
Motto: Pro rege. (FD7)<br />
POWYS The Hon. Stephen Powys, later 6 th Baron Lilford, (1869-1949), was <strong>of</strong> St. Anne's, Chertsey, in 1911. (VCHS iii 405)<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Or a lion's gamb bendwise erased between two cross crosslets fitché Gules.<br />
Crest: A bear's gamb erased and erect Gules holding a sceptre also erect headed with a fleur-de-lys Or.<br />

POYNINGS The Poynings family acquired Wisley by the marriage <strong>of</strong> Richard, Lord Poynings, (c.1355-87), to Isabel, (d.1394), daughter<br />
<strong>of</strong> Robert FitzPayn. Their son Robert, Lord Poynings, (1382-1446), settled the manor on his daughter Eleanor, (d.1484), on her marriage, 1435,<br />
to Henry de Percy, son <strong>of</strong> Henry, Earl <strong>of</strong> Northumberland. (VCHS iii 379)<br />
