STRACHEY Oliver Strachey, CBE, <strong>of</strong> The Mud House, Friday's Hill, Haslemere, (1874-1960), was 3 rd son <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant-General Sir<br />

Richard Strachey, GCSI, LL.D, FRS, RE, (1817-1908), and descended from Sir Henry Strachey, 1 st Bart., (1737-1810), as did also Lieutenant-<br />

Colonel John Strachey, MVO, IA, <strong>of</strong> The Little House, Leatherhead, (1857-1945), son <strong>of</strong> Sir John Strachey, GCSI, CIE, DCL, (1823-1907),<br />

Lieutenant-Governor <strong>of</strong> the NW Provinces, India. Of the same family, Evelyn John St. Loe Strachey <strong>of</strong> Harrowhill Copse, Newlands Corner,<br />

Merrow, (1901-63), was 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> John St. Loe Strachey, DL, JP, (1860-1927), and grandson <strong>of</strong> Sir Edward Strachey, 3 rd Bart., (1812-1901).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Argent a cross between four eagles displayed Gules (Strachey); 2 and 3, Or three crescents Sable on a<br />

canton <strong>of</strong> the second a ducal coronet Gold (Hodges).<br />

Crest: An eagle displayed Gules charged on the breast with a cross crosslet fitché Argent.<br />

STRACHEY Baron O'Hagan. Charles Towneley Strachey, 4 th Baron O'Hagan, <strong>of</strong> Tullahogue, Co. Tyrone, MA (Oxon),<br />

(b.1945), is <strong>of</strong> Lion Gate House, Richmond.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Ermine a bend and on a chief Azure a fleur-de-lys Or (O'Hagan); 2 and 3, Argent a fess and in chief three<br />

mullets Sable (Towneley).<br />

Crests: 1, Upon a fasces fesswise Proper a cubit arm vested Gules cuffed Ermine the hand holding a dagger erect both also Proper<br />

STREATFEILD Robert Streatfeild <strong>of</strong> Wandsworth, (1722-68), a cadet <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Chiddingstone, Kent, married, 1748, Anne, daughter<br />

and heir <strong>of</strong> Samuel Sandeforth, and was father <strong>of</strong> Sandeforth Streatfeild <strong>of</strong> Long Ditton, (1750-1809).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per fess Gules and Sable three bezants.<br />

Crest: An arm in armour Proper bent from the elbow the forearm encircled with a band tied in a knot Gules supporting a spear with<br />

a pennon showing Argent St. George's Cross on the dexter side <strong>of</strong> the spear and Gules three bezants fesswise on the sinister the pennon being<br />

turned round the spear to show part <strong>of</strong> both sides.<br />

Motto: Data fata secutus. (BLG18)<br />

STRICKLAND Claude Francis Strickland, CIE, BA (Oxon), ICS, <strong>of</strong> Goldhill Manor, Lower Bourne, {Farnham}, (1881-1962), was 2 nd son<br />

<strong>of</strong> Robert Strickland, (1848-1925), and descended from Sir George Strickland, 5 th Bart., (1729-1808). Stanley Arthur Strickland <strong>of</strong> 28 Cavendish<br />

Road, New Malden, and John Edward Strickland <strong>of</strong> 56 Chertsey Drive, North Cheam, sons <strong>of</strong> Arthur William Strickland, (b.1890), are<br />

descended from Sir William Strickland, 6 th Bart.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: At the Visitation <strong>of</strong> Yorkshire, 1665, Dugdale recorded: Gules a chevron between three crosses pattée Or on a canton Ermine<br />

a buck's head erased Sable.<br />

Crest: A turkey cock Argent beaked Sable crested Gules. (CVY)<br />

Burke recorded the same arms, with Crest A turkey cock in his pride Proper.<br />

Motto: A la volunté de Dieu. (BP99)<br />

In a later edition, Burke blazons the chevron in the arms as Or. (BP105)<br />

STRINGER <strong>of</strong> Effingham.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a cross patonce between four martlets Sable, a canton Erminois.<br />

Crest: A martlet Gules.<br />

As borne by Miles Stringer, (d.1839), <strong>of</strong> Effingham Hill. (Brayley)<br />

Miles Stringer was Sheriff <strong>of</strong> <strong>Surrey</strong>, 1832.<br />

STRONG Clement Samuel Strong <strong>of</strong> Limpsfield, was son <strong>of</strong> Melanchthon Strong, whose ancestors were <strong>of</strong> Nether Stowey, Somerset.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules an eagle displayed Or.<br />

Crest: An eagle displayed Or. (BGA)<br />
