MOWBRAY Duke <strong>of</strong> Norfolk. John Lord Mowbray, (1286-1322), acquired the manor <strong>of</strong> Little Bookham by marriage, 1298, to Aline,<br />

daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> William de Braose, Lord Brewes. Thomas Mowbray, 1 st Duke <strong>of</strong> Norfolk, (1366-99), acquired a share in the manor <strong>of</strong><br />

Dorking and lands in Southwark by marriage, 1384, to Elizabeth, (d.1425), daughter <strong>of</strong> Richard FitzAlan, Earl <strong>of</strong> Arundel, and sister and coheir<br />

<strong>of</strong> Thomas FitzAlan, Earl <strong>of</strong> Arundel, qv. Their daughter Margaret married Sir Robert Howard, qv, (sub Howard, Duke <strong>of</strong> Norfolk).<br />

both <strong>of</strong> Banstead; and as impaled on a brass in Reigate Church by John James for his 2 nd wife, Jane, daughter <strong>of</strong> Philip Moys.<br />

Devon, (b.1887), and descended from the Rev. Frederick Luttrell Moysey, MA (Oxon), <strong>of</strong> Bathealton Court, Somerset, (1815-1906).<br />

MUGGERIDGE Granted to Henry Muggeridge, <strong>of</strong> Streatham, and <strong>of</strong> the City <strong>of</strong> London, Alderman <strong>of</strong> the Ward <strong>of</strong> Castle Baynard.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per chevron engrailed Argent and Azure in chief two griffins segreant <strong>of</strong> the second and in base a garb Or.<br />

Crest: Upon a mount Vert a buck's head erased Proper charged with two chevronels Azure between four stalks <strong>of</strong> oats in full grain<br />

MULCASTER [MUNCASTER] <strong>of</strong> Brackenhill Tower in Arthuret, Cumberland, then <strong>of</strong> Carlisle, Cumberland, and in 1623 <strong>of</strong> Stanford<br />

Rivers, Essex, and Shiremark in Charlwood.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Barry Argent and Gules a bend Azure. *<br />

Crest: A lion rampant Azure ducally gorged [crowned] Or, holding in his dexter paw a sword erect Argent, pomel and hilt <strong>of</strong> the<br />

second, the point embrued Gules.<br />

As borne (SV1623) by Richard Mulcaster <strong>of</strong> Charlwood and his father, William Mulcaster <strong>of</strong> Charlwood, which last was son <strong>of</strong> George<br />

Mulcaster <strong>of</strong> Charlwood, younger brother <strong>of</strong> Richard Mulcaster, the famous Master <strong>of</strong> St. Paul's School, London, whose son, Peter Mulcaster,<br />

was in 1623 <strong>of</strong> Stanford Rivers, Essex. Richard and George Mulcaster were sons <strong>of</strong> William Mulcaster <strong>of</strong> Carlisle, grandson and representative<br />

<strong>of</strong> John Mulcaster <strong>of</strong> Brackenhill Tower, whose ancestors, descended from a younger son <strong>of</strong> the Penningtons <strong>of</strong> Muncaster Castle, Cumberland,<br />

had resided at Brackenhill for many generations. The above coat was borne from the time <strong>of</strong> Edward III by Sir Robert de Molcaster alias<br />

Moncastre, and with the addition <strong>of</strong> three escallops Or on the bend by Walter de Molcastre, a younger son, from the time <strong>of</strong> Henry III.<br />

was 4 th son <strong>of</strong> the 2 nd Baron Dunleath, (1854-1931).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure a stag's head erased Argent between three escallops Or.<br />

MULLENS Sir John Ashley Mullens <strong>of</strong> The Manor House, Haslemere, (1869-1937), was 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> John Ashley Mullens <strong>of</strong> St. Helen's<br />

Wood and <strong>of</strong> Westfield Place, Sussex, (d.1927).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure a cross moline Or charged with five billets <strong>of</strong> the field within a bordure <strong>of</strong> the second.<br />

Crest: An eagle's head erased Proper in the beak a billet bendwise Or.<br />
