MEGGES <strong>of</strong> Whitechapel, Middlesex, <strong>of</strong> Newington, <strong>Surrey</strong>, and <strong>of</strong> Theydon Gernon, Essex.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or a chevron engrailed Azure between three mascles Gules, on a chief Sable a greyhound courant Argent.<br />

Crest: A griffin sejant per pale Gules and Or, beaked, legged and ducally gorged <strong>of</strong> the last, with wings endorsed.<br />

As borne by William Megges <strong>of</strong> Whitechapel and the Rev. James Megges, DD, (d.1672), Rector <strong>of</strong> Newington and Theydon Gernon, sons <strong>of</strong><br />

William Megges, (d.1621), <strong>of</strong> Whitechapel, citizen and draper <strong>of</strong> London, son <strong>of</strong> William Megges, (d.1597), <strong>of</strong> Whitechapel, citizen and draper<br />

<strong>of</strong> London, to which last these arms and crest were granted, Jun 4, 1579.<br />

MEREHURST John de Merehurst sued for land in Worplesdon in 1317. SV1623 includes a pedigree <strong>of</strong> Merehurst <strong>of</strong> Worplesdon, and John<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Burke records the following for Meerehurst, <strong>of</strong> Worplesdon:<br />

Per pale Azure and Gules three roses Argent on a chief Or a lion passant guardant <strong>of</strong> the second.<br />

had issue, amongst others, a 2 nd son Thomas Hardwick Merriman, <strong>of</strong> Manor House, Barnes, solicitor, (1828-84), and a 4 th son Sepimus<br />

Merriman <strong>of</strong> Whitcombe, Worcester Park, (1836-1900), father <strong>of</strong> George Frederick Maskelyne Merriman <strong>of</strong> Worcester Park, architect, (b.1877).<br />

Of the same family, Commander Reginald Dundas Merriman, DSC, RIN, <strong>of</strong> Somerdown, 26 Somers Road, Reigate, (b.1887), elder son <strong>of</strong><br />

George Lanshaw Merriman, (1846-1922); and the Rev. Henry Gordon Merriman, MA, DD (Oxon), (1823-87), Headmaster <strong>of</strong> Guildford<br />

Grammar School, was 8 th son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Merriman <strong>of</strong> Lockeridge House, Marlborough, attorney-at-law and banker, (1771-1841), from whom<br />

descended also Frank Leopold Merriman <strong>of</strong> the Firs, West Byfleet, (b.1899), son <strong>of</strong> John Henry Merriman, (1847-1922),<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a chevron cotised Sable between three Cornish choughs Proper as many crescents <strong>of</strong> the field.<br />

Crest: A serpent nowed therefrom issuant a dexter arm embowed in armour Proper garnished Or the hand grasping a short sword<br />

also Proper pommel and hilt Gold.<br />
