SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

LOWTHER Earl <strong>of</strong> Lonsdale. Sir James Lowther, Earl <strong>of</strong> Lonsdale, (1736-1802), bought the manor <strong>of</strong> Haslemere, 1784, and was<br />

succeeded by his cousin, Sir William Lowther, 1 st Earl <strong>of</strong> Lonsdale <strong>of</strong> the 2 nd creation, (1757-1844). DPB1868 records St. Anne's, Barnes, as a<br />

residence <strong>of</strong> Sir William Lowther, 2 nd Earl <strong>of</strong> Lonsdale, (1787-1872).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or six annulets, three, two and one, Sable.<br />

Crest: A dragon passant Argent.<br />

Supporters: Two horses Argent each gorged with a wreath <strong>of</strong> laurel Vert.<br />

Motto: Magistratus indicat virum.<br />

LUBBOCK Robert James Lubbock <strong>of</strong> Mannings Hill, Horseshoe Lane, Cranleigh, son <strong>of</strong> Captain Rupert Egerton Lubbock, RN, (1886-<br />

1943), is descended from Sir John William Lubbock, 3 rd Bart., (1803-65), from whom descended also Humphrey Thornton Lubbock <strong>of</strong> 11<br />

Vineyard Hill Road, Wimbledon, (1886-1962), Hon. Captain 28 th London Regiment, (Artists Rifles), son <strong>of</strong> Charles Western Lubbock, (1862-<br />

90); and Ge<strong>of</strong>frey Lubbock <strong>of</strong> Birch Hall, Windlesham, (1873-1932), High Sheriff <strong>of</strong> the <strong>County</strong> <strong>of</strong> London, 1913, 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Henry James<br />

Lubbock, DL, JP, (1838-1910).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a mount Vert a stork close Ermine a chief Gules charged with three estoiles <strong>of</strong> the field.<br />

Crest: A stork wings elevated Ermine resting the dexter claw on an antique shield Azure bordered Or charged with a lion rampant<br />

guardant Argent.<br />

LUCAS Sir Thomas Lucas, 1 st Bart., VD, DL, JP, <strong>of</strong> Ashtead Park, (1822-1902), was created Baronet, 1887. The title is now held by<br />

his grandson Major Sir Jocelyn Morton Lucas, 4 th Bart., KBE, MC, <strong>of</strong> Michelmersh Court, Hampshire, (b.1889).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per bend Argent and Gules a bend dovetailed between six annulets counterchanged.<br />

Crest: Issuing from a wreath <strong>of</strong> oak Or a dragon's head with wings endorsed Gules semé <strong>of</strong> annulets Argent.<br />

LUCAS Lieutenant-Colonel Leonard Wainwright Lucas, DSO, MC, The Buffs, <strong>of</strong> Mylncr<strong>of</strong>t, Frimley Green, (b.1879), son <strong>of</strong> Joseph<br />

Lucas, JP, <strong>of</strong> Foxhunt Manor, Sussex, and Birkdale, Bournemouth, {Hampshre/Dorset}, (1850-1924).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per chevron Vert and Or in chief a crescent Ermine between two lucies hauriant <strong>of</strong> the second and in base a catherine wheel<br />

<strong>of</strong> the first.<br />

LUGARD Baron Lugard. Sir Frederick John Dealtry Lugard, PC, GCMG, CB, DSO, <strong>of</strong> Little Parkhurst, Abinger Common, (1858-<br />

1945), son <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Frederick Grueber Lugard, (1808-1900), was created Baron Lugard <strong>of</strong> Abinger, 1928. His brother Major Edward James<br />

Lugard, DSO, OBE, (b.1865), was <strong>of</strong> Furzen Wood, Abinger Common.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules an Eastern crown between three wolves' heads couped Or langued Azure collared gemel Gules.<br />

Crest: A wolf's head erased Or langued Gules holding in the mouth a lance in bend sinister therefrom flowing to the dexter a banner<br />

Gules charged with an Eastern crown Or.<br />

Supporters: On either side a wolf Proper gorged with an Eastern crown Or.<br />

LUMB Lieutenant-Colonel Edward James Machell Lumb, JP, <strong>of</strong> Northcr<strong>of</strong>t House, Englefield Green, (b.1863), son <strong>of</strong> James Lumb,<br />

DL, JP, <strong>of</strong> Holmwood, Hensingham, Cumberland, and <strong>of</strong> Cunsey, Westmorland, (1826-1901), High Sheriff <strong>of</strong> Cumberland, 1880.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or three escutcheons Sable each charged with a mullet pierced <strong>of</strong> the first a martlet for difference.<br />

Crest: A blackamoor's head in pr<strong>of</strong>ile couped at the shoulders Proper wreathed about the temples Or and Sable and charged on the<br />

neck with a mullet <strong>of</strong> six points Gold within a wreath in arch Or and Sable.<br />

LUMLEY <strong>of</strong> Lumley Castle in Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham, and, before 1557, <strong>of</strong> Cheam. Extinct 1609. Baron Lumley<br />

by writ, 1385, but attainted 1400. The attainder was reversed and the barony restored, 1461, but again lost by attainder in 1537, on the<br />

participation <strong>of</strong> George Lumley, Baron Lumley, (d.1537), in Aske's rebellion. John Lumley, (d.Apr 11, 1609), son <strong>of</strong> this George, was restored in<br />

blood and created Baron Lumley, 1547.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: The coat <strong>of</strong> this family previous to 1338 was assumed to have been Gules six parrots [martlets] Argent.<br />

mother Lucy, daughter and co-heir <strong>of</strong> Sir Marmaduke de Thweng <strong>of</strong> Kilton Castle, Yorkshire North Riding, ie Argent a fess Gules between three<br />

parrots Vert collared Or, which was borne by Sir Rauf de Lumley, (d.1400), son <strong>of</strong> Sir Marmaduke. (Foster, p.159)<br />
