LONGMAN Sir Hubert Harry Longman, 1 st and last Bart., JP, <strong>of</strong> Lavershott Hall, Windlesham, and <strong>of</strong> Little Paddocks, Warren Close,<br />

Esher, (1856-1940), son <strong>of</strong> William Longman, <strong>of</strong> London, publisher, (1813-77), was partner in the publishing firm <strong>of</strong> Longmans, Green and Co.<br />

and was created Baronet 1909.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules an ancient ship in full sail Proper between three buckles Or.<br />

Crest: A lion rampant Azure between two buckles as in the arms. (FD7)<br />

LONGMORE Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Murray Longmore, GCB, DSO, DL, FRES, <strong>of</strong> Pipits Hill, Wentworth, (1885-1970), had a 2 nd<br />

son Wing-Commander William James Maitland Longmore, RAF, <strong>of</strong> Parrocke Lodge, Wentworth, merchant banker, (b.1919).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Erminois on a chevron Azure between two leopards' faces in chief Proper and a lion passant guardant in base Gules three<br />

cross crosslets Or.<br />

Crest: Two javelins in saltire surmounted <strong>of</strong> a leopard's face encircled by a garland <strong>of</strong> roses and violets all Proper.<br />

LONGSTAFF George Dixon Longstaff, MD (Edinburgh), <strong>of</strong> Butter Knowle, Wandsworth, and <strong>of</strong> Hull,{Yorkshire}, (1799-1892), was born<br />

at Bishopwearmouth, Co. Durham, son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Longstaff, <strong>of</strong> Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham, (1768-1829). He was father <strong>of</strong> Colonel<br />

Llewellyn Wood Longstaff, OBE, <strong>of</strong> Ridgelands, Wimbledon, (1841-1918) and <strong>of</strong> George Blundell Longstaff, JP, MA, MD (Oxon), FRCP, <strong>of</strong><br />

Highlands, Putney Heath and <strong>of</strong> Twitchen, Mortehoe, Devon, (1849-1921).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly Argent and Sable on a bend indented Gules between two pheons <strong>of</strong> the first a quarter-staff Or.<br />

Crest: Two arms embowed vested Sable semé-de-lys and cuffed Argent the hands Proper grasping a quarter-staff fessways Or.<br />

LONSDALE The Rev. John Lonsdale, BA (Cantab), (1737-1800), Perpetual Curate <strong>of</strong> Chapelthorpe and Vicar <strong>of</strong> Darfield, Yorlshire,<br />

moved to Clapham. He was father <strong>of</strong> the Rt. Rev. John Lonsdale, (1788-1867), Bishop <strong>of</strong> Lichfield, 1843-67, whose son the Rev. James Gylby<br />

Lonsdale, MA (Oxon and Dunelm), (1816-92), later Principal <strong>of</strong> Hatfield Hall, University <strong>of</strong> Durham, 1854-5, was born at Clapham whilst his<br />

father was Chaplain to Archbishop Manners-Sutton.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1, Quarterly Vert and Argent in the second and third quarters a bugle horn Sable stringed Gules over all on a bend<br />

engrailed Or three annulets Sable (Lonsdale); 2, Azure a fess wavy between three estoiles Argent (Gylby); 3, Lozengy Argent and Gules<br />

LOVEL Lord Lovel and Lord Morley. The Lovel family acquired the manor <strong>of</strong> Rotherhithe by the marriage <strong>of</strong> John, Lord<br />

Lovel <strong>of</strong> Titmarsh, (killed at Bannockburn, 1314), to Maud, (d.1341), sister and heir <strong>of</strong> Edward, Lord Burnell. It descended to William, Lord<br />

Lovel <strong>of</strong> Titmarsh, (d.1455), who was succeeded by his younger son William Lovel, Lord Morley, (d.1476). (VCHS iv 87)<br />
