MAITLAND <strong>of</strong> Thirlstane Castle in Lauder, Berwickshire, and also, from 1671 to 1682, <strong>of</strong> Ham House in Petersham. Lord Maitland <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or a lion rampant Gules couped at all the joints <strong>of</strong> the field within a double tressure flory counterflory <strong>of</strong> the second.<br />
Crest: A lion sejant full faced Gules crowned with an open imperial crown and holding in the dexter paw a sword Proper, pomel<br />
and hilt Gold and in the sinister a fleur-de-lys Azure.<br />
Supporters: Two eagles with wings inverted Proper.<br />
Motto: Consilio et amimis.<br />

The lion in the arms does not appear originally to have been couped at the joints, nor was the shield charged with the tressure; while the original<br />
crest was A lion head erased: all which is evident from the seals <strong>of</strong> Sir Richard Maitland, (d.1586), <strong>of</strong> Lethington, Lord Privy Seal for Scotland.<br />

Sir Richard's son, Sir John Maitland, (d.1595), Lord Chancellor <strong>of</strong> Scotland and first Lord Thirlestane, added the tressure, and adopted, (minus<br />
the crown) the crest now borne. John Maitland, the 2 nd Lord and 1 st Earl, was the first to bear the lion couped at the joints. The supporters and<br />

(1847-1919), grandson <strong>of</strong> Sir Alexander Charles Maitland, 2 nd Bart., (1755-1848), as using for<br />

created Baronet 1922. The title expired on the death, 1962, <strong>of</strong> his grandson Sir Anthony Meyrick Mallaby-Deeley, 3 rd Bart., <strong>of</strong> Slater's Oak,<br />
Effingham.<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Sable a chevron engrailed Ermine between in chief two fleurs-de-lys and in base a crescent Or (Deeley);<br />
2 and 3, Or a bunch <strong>of</strong> nettles Proper and a chief Sable (Mallaby).<br />
Crests: 1, A sinister cubit arm in armour gauntleted holding in the hand a dagger point downwards Proper pommel and hilt Or<br />
