SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

MUNBY Arthur Joseph Munby, MA (Cantab), FSA, <strong>of</strong> Pyrford, barrister-at-law, (1828-1910), * was eldest son <strong>of</strong> Joseph Munby, <strong>of</strong><br />

Clifton Holme, Yorkshire, solicitor. He was a conveyancer in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners' Office, 1858-88, and was well known as a poet<br />

and man <strong>of</strong> letters. (DNB)<br />

His nephew the Rev. Henry Edwin Munby, MA (Cantab), (1874-1937), was Curate <strong>of</strong> St. George, Camberwell, 1901-3.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or fretty Azure on a canton Gules a cross pattée Argent.<br />

Crest: A dexter arm in armour embowed the hand grasping a battle axe all Proper.<br />

Motto: Virtus tutamen stemma (FD 1895, which states "No authority has yet been established in the College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arms</strong>")<br />

MUNRO Hector William Bower Munro <strong>of</strong> Ewell Castle, and <strong>of</strong> Edmondsham, Dorset, (1796-1842), was father <strong>of</strong> Captain Hector<br />

Monro, DJ, JP, 57 th Foot, <strong>of</strong> Ewell Castle, later <strong>of</strong> Edmondsham, (1827-1902).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or an eagle's head erased Gules holding in its beak a laurel sprig Proper.<br />

Crest: An eagle displayed Proper.<br />

MUNRO-LUCAS-TOOTH Sir Hugh Vere Huntly Duff Munro-Lucas-Tooth, 1 st Bart., <strong>of</strong> Bught, Inverness, BA (Oxon), (b.1903), was at one<br />

time <strong>of</strong> The Green House, Wimbledon.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Gules a demi griffin segreant between three feathers Argent (Tooth); 2 and 3, Azure on a bend between in<br />

chief two crescents and in base an estoile Argent three vine leaves Proper (Lucas).<br />

Crests: 1, A griffin segreant Gules semé <strong>of</strong> mullets and holding in the sinister claw a feather Argent (Tooth), 2, A demi dragon<br />

Azure holding in the paws a vine branch fructed and leaved Proper.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure an imperial crown Or between three estoiles Argent within a double tressure flory counter-flory <strong>of</strong> the second.<br />

Crest: A mermaid holding a mirror in her right hand and in her left a comb all Proper.<br />

Perthshire, cadets <strong>of</strong> Murray <strong>of</strong> Tullibardine. His eldest daughter and co-heiress, Elizabeth, (d.1698), wife, successively, <strong>of</strong> Sir Lionel<br />

Tollemache <strong>of</strong> Helmingham, and <strong>of</strong> John Maitland, Duke <strong>of</strong> Lauderdale, was created Baroness Huntingtower and Countess <strong>of</strong> Dysart in her own<br />

right, Dec 5, 1660.<br />

MURRAY General Sir Archibald James Murray, GCB, GCMG, CVO, DSO, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, <strong>of</strong> Makepeace, Park Lane,<br />

Reigate, (1860-1945), was 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Charles Murray, <strong>of</strong> Woodhouse, Kingsclere, Hampshire, (d.1879).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure three mullets Argent with eight fleurs-de-lys in orle Or.<br />

Crest: On three thistles leaved and slipped Proper a paschal lamb also Proper.<br />

Motto: Immaculata gens. (FD7)<br />

MURRAY Earl <strong>of</strong> Albemarle. John Murray, Earl <strong>of</strong> Albemarle, (d.1640), bought the manor <strong>of</strong> Wanborough, which his son<br />

James, 2 nd Earl <strong>of</strong> Albemarle, sold soon after his father's death. (VCHS iii 374)<br />

MUSCHAMP The Muschamp family acquired East Horsley by the marriage <strong>of</strong> William Muschamp to Mary, (d.1620), sister and heir <strong>of</strong><br />

John Agmondesham, qv. Their descendant Ambrose Muschamp conveyed it in 1701 to Frances, Viscountess Lanesborough, widow <strong>of</strong> his<br />

brother Denny Muschamp who had already in 1698 acquired the Bishop's Manor in East Horsley. (VCHS iii 350)<br />
