NIBLETT Burke states that a branch <strong>of</strong> the Niblett family <strong>of</strong> Gloucestershire settled at Dorking in the latter part <strong>of</strong> the 17 th century and<br />

bore the following<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable a serpent Proper beneath a rose Or between two doves Argent beaked and membered Gules.<br />

Crest: A lion couchant Or protecting a cross Or. (BLG4)<br />

Fairbairn records this as: On a mount Vert a lion couchant guarding a cross Gules. (FBC)<br />

NICHOLS John Gough Nichols, FSA, <strong>of</strong> Holmwood Park, (1806-73), grandson <strong>of</strong> John Nichols, FSA, the well-known author <strong>of</strong> The<br />

History <strong>of</strong> Leicestershire, (1745-1826), was father <strong>of</strong> John Bruce Nichols, MA (Oxon), <strong>of</strong> Holmwood Park, (1848-1922), who had issue, amongst<br />

others, John Cradock Morgan Nichols, MA (Oxon), <strong>of</strong> The Laurels, Beacon Hill, Hindhead, (b.1876).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure on a fess humetté between three lions' heads erased Or two eagles rising <strong>of</strong> the field.<br />

Crest: A lion's head erased Azure gorged with a collar gemel Or between two wings paly <strong>of</strong> six Or and Azure.<br />

NICHOLSON The Rev. George Nicholson <strong>of</strong> Kirkoswald, Cumberland, a well known Nonconformist, (1636-97), was grandfather <strong>of</strong><br />

Samuel Nicholson, (b.1738), who was father <strong>of</strong> George Thomas Nicholson <strong>of</strong> Waverley Abbey, Farnham, (1787- 1858), Vice-Lieutenant <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Surrey</strong> and High Sheriff, 1832. He was succeeded by his eldest son Samuel Nicholson, DL, JP, <strong>of</strong> Waverley Abbey, (b.1815).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per pale dovetailed Azure and Gules two bars Argent gutté-de-sang in chief two suns in glory Argent.<br />

Crest: A lion's head erased in front <strong>of</strong> rays. (BLG4)<br />

NICHOLSON Henry Nicholson <strong>of</strong> Church Road, Brixton Hill, (1834-82), had issue, an eldest son, Henry Withnall Nicholson <strong>of</strong> Clavadel,<br />

Merstham, (b.1860), father <strong>of</strong> George Henry Nicholson <strong>of</strong> Doone Cottage, Merstham; and a 3 rd son William Piper Nicholson <strong>of</strong> Church Hill<br />

House, Merstham, (b.1868).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules a demi figure representing Bellerophon to the sinister Proper on a chief wavy barry wavy <strong>of</strong> eight Argent and Azure<br />

three fleurs-de-lys Or.<br />

Crest: A hulk <strong>of</strong> a ship on stocks with mast Or flying therefrom a pennant per fess Argent and Gules charged with a hammer<br />

fesswise Proper.<br />

Crest: Out <strong>of</strong> an antique crown Gules a lion's head Ermine gorged with a collar gemel Azure.<br />

NIGHTINGALE Major-General Manners Ralph Wilmot Nightingale, CB, CMG, CIE, DSO, IA, <strong>of</strong> Thimble Hall, Betton Road, Camberley,<br />

(1871-1956), was 4 th son <strong>of</strong> Percy Nightingale, Inspecting Commissioner, Cape <strong>of</strong> Good Hope, (1836-95), and was descended from Sir Charles<br />

Ethelston Nightingale, 11 th Bart., (1784-1846).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per pale Ermine and Gules a rose counterchanged.<br />

Crest: An ibex sejant Argent tufted armed and maned Or.<br />

Motto: Pro rege et patria. (BP99)<br />

NIVISON Baron Glendyne. Sir Robert Nivison, Bart., 3 rd Baron Glendyne <strong>of</strong> Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire, <strong>of</strong> Red Court,<br />

Haslemere, (b.1926), succeeded his father the 2 nd Baron on the latter's death, 1967.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per chevron Or and Azure in chief two eagles displayed <strong>of</strong> the second and in base an eagle rising <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />

Crest: Upon the battlements <strong>of</strong> a tower Proper a wolf passant Sable gorged with a collar and line reflexed over the back Or.<br />

Supporters: On either side a wolf Sable gorged with a collar with line reflexed over the back Or and charged on the shoulder with a<br />

saltire couped Argent.<br />
