SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

SHRUBB James Shrubb <strong>of</strong> Merrist Wood and Guildford, (d.1775), married Elizabeth, daughter <strong>of</strong> John Peyto <strong>of</strong> Guildford, and was<br />

father <strong>of</strong> John Peyto Shrubb, JP, <strong>of</strong> Merrist Wood and Stoke, (1762-1845). He had issue, amongst others, an eldest son John Peyto Shrubb, (dvp<br />

1807), a 2 nd son George James Shrubb <strong>of</strong> Merrist Wood and Stoke, (dsp 1846), and a 3 rd son the Rev. Charles Shrubb, <strong>of</strong> Merrist Wood and<br />

Stoke, also <strong>of</strong> Vicars Hill, Hampshire, (b.1834). The latter was father <strong>of</strong> Charles Peyto Shrubb <strong>of</strong> Merrist Wood and <strong>of</strong> Vicars Hill, (dsp 1899).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure on a chevron engrailed between a lion passant guardant in chief and an escallop in base Argent three roses Gules<br />

barbed and seeded Proper. (FD7; BGA)<br />

BLG11, however, gives: Azure on a chevron Or between a lion passant guardant in chief and an escallop in base Argent three roses Gules barbed<br />

and seeded Proper.<br />

Crest: An eagle reguardant perched on an oak branch fructed all Proper charged on the breast with a rose as in the arms.<br />

BGA and BLG8 record the eagle as charged on the breast with an escallop Gules.<br />

SHUTTLEWORTH Lieutenant-Colonel William Preston Ashton Shuttleworth <strong>of</strong> Manor Lodge, Milford, (b.1915), son <strong>of</strong> Captain<br />

William Gabbett Ashton Shuttleworth, RN, (1883-1968), and grandson <strong>of</strong> Colonel Ashton John Shuttleworth, DL, JP, RA, <strong>of</strong> Hathersage Hall,<br />

Derbyshire, (1840-1912).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent three shuttles Sable topped and furnished with quills <strong>of</strong> yarn the threads pendent Or.<br />

Crest: A cubit arm in armour Proper grasping in the gauntlet a shuttle <strong>of</strong> the arms.<br />

SIDNEY Alone and impaled by Gainsford on the monument in All Saints' Church, Carshalton; Nicholas Gainsford, (d.1497), qv,<br />

married Margaret, daughter <strong>of</strong> William Sidney.<br />

SILLITTOE The Rev. Hubert John Sillittoe, (b.1886), elder son <strong>of</strong> Joseph Henry Sillittoe, <strong>of</strong> Monkseaton, Northumberland, (1856-1927),<br />

was Curate <strong>of</strong> Putney, 1914-17, and Curate <strong>of</strong> St. James', (in charge <strong>of</strong> St. Martin's), Croydon, 1919-21. His brother Sir Percy Joseph Sillittoe,<br />

KBE, DL, (1888-1962), was father <strong>of</strong> Anthony Watson Sillittoe, <strong>of</strong> 6 The Ridgeway, Wimbledon, (b.1924).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Paly <strong>of</strong> six Gules and Argent on a chief Ermine four crescents <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />

Crest: A roundle paly <strong>of</strong> six Gules and Argent charged with an anchor cabled Sable.<br />

SIM John Coysgarne Sim, DL, JP, (d.1875), was <strong>of</strong> Coombe Wood.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules on a chevron Argent between two spur rowels in chief and a halbert in base Or a boar's head erased between two hands<br />

each holding a dagger Proper.<br />

Crest: A Moor's head Proper banded Argent.<br />

SIMEON Edward Simeon <strong>of</strong> Carshalton House, (1788-1851), was 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Sir John Simeon, 1 st Bart., (d.1824), Senior Master <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Court <strong>of</strong> Chancery. Percival Barrington Simeon <strong>of</strong> Fircones, Tilford, (1862-1951), was son <strong>of</strong> Cornwall Shaw Simeon <strong>of</strong> Lincoln's Inn, barristerat-law,<br />

(1820-80), and grandson <strong>of</strong> Sir Richard Godwin Simeon, 2 nd Bart., (1784-1854).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per fess Sable and Or a pale counterchanged in chief an ermine spot <strong>of</strong> the first between two trefoils slipped <strong>of</strong> the second<br />

and in base a like trefoil between two like ermine spots.<br />

Crest: A fox passant reguardant Proper in the mouth a trefoil slipped Vert.<br />

SIMON Viscount Simon. Sir John Allsebrook Simon, PC, GCSI, GCVO, OBE, 1 st Viscount Simon, <strong>of</strong> Stackpole Elidor,<br />

Pembrokeshire, (1873-1954), was <strong>of</strong> Dowding, Tadworth.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules three lotus flowers in pale Proper between two flaunches Or each charged with a lion rampant <strong>of</strong> the field.<br />

Crest: Upon a well Proper an eagle rising Or.<br />

Supporters: Dexter, A Guillemot; Sinister, A Monal; both Proper.<br />

SIMPSON <strong>of</strong> Vauxhall also <strong>of</strong> Fulham.<br />

SIMPSON The Simpson family acquired Mitcham Canons by the marriage <strong>of</strong> William Simpson, <strong>of</strong> Lichfield, {Staffordshire}, to Emily,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Captain Richard Dixon, post Cranmer, qv; William F J Simpson was Lord <strong>of</strong> the Manor in 1912.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per bend sinister Or and Sable a lion rampant counterchanged holding between the paws a gauntlet Azure.<br />

Crest: An ounce's head Proper erased and ducally crowned Gules charged on the neck with a gauntlet Or.<br />
