SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

KING <strong>of</strong> Ockham Park. Baron King, May 25, 1725. Baron Ockham, Viscount Ockham and Earl <strong>of</strong> Lovelace. June 30, 1838.<br />

William King, 1 st Earl <strong>of</strong> Lovelace, married Ada Augusta, daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> George Gordon Byron, Baron Gordon, the poet, by his wife,<br />

Anne Isabella, daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> Sir Ralph Milbanke Noel, Bart., Baroness Wentworth in her own right. Their eldest son, Byron Noel King,<br />

Viscount Ockham who died in vita patris, succeeded to the Barony <strong>of</strong> Wentworth, in which he was followed by his brother, the 2 nd Earl, who<br />

held the Barony <strong>of</strong> Wentworth, <strong>of</strong> Nettlested, from 1862 until his death in 1906 without male issue * when it passed to his daughter, Ada Mary,<br />

and on her death in 1917, to her aunt, Anna Isabella Noel, daughter <strong>of</strong> the 1 st Earl and wife <strong>of</strong> Wilfred Scawen Blunt <strong>of</strong> Crabbet Park, Sussex.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable three spear heads erect two and one, Argent, the points Gules, on a chief Or three pole-axes Azure.<br />

Crest: A dexter arm erect and couped at the elbow vested Azure adorned with three Ermine sports in fess Or, the cuff turned up<br />

Argent ** grasping a broken pikestaff Sable, the lower end encased <strong>of</strong> the third.<br />

Supporters: Two mastiffs regardant Proper collared Gules.<br />

Motto: Ipse labor voluptas.<br />

Descended from Peter King <strong>of</strong> Ockham, 1 st Baron King, Lord Chancellor <strong>of</strong> England, son <strong>of</strong> Jerome King <strong>of</strong> Exeter, Devon, and nephew <strong>of</strong> John<br />

Locke, the philosopher. The first Earl, (d.1893), took the name <strong>of</strong> King-Noel, Sep 29, 1850, and bore<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Or fretty Gules a canton Ermine, for Noel; 2 and 3, King, as above.<br />

Supporters: as above.<br />

Byron Noel King, Viscount Ockham and Baron Wentworth bore<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1, Noel, as above. 2, King, as above; 3, Sable a chevron between three leopard faces Or for Wentworth; 4, Argent<br />

on a chief indented Sable three martlets <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />

Crests: 1, Noel, as above; 2, King, as above.<br />

Motto: Penses a bien. From his monument in Ockham Church.<br />

The 2 nd Earl, (d.1906), took the name <strong>of</strong> Milbanke instead <strong>of</strong> King-Noel, Nov 6, 1861, and bore<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1, Gules a bend Ermine, on a canton Or a lion head erased <strong>of</strong> the first, for Milbanke; 2, King, as above; 3, Argent<br />

three bends enhanced Gules, for Byron; 4, Noel, as above.<br />

Crests: 1, to the dexter, A lion head erased Gules charged with a bend Ermine, for Milbanke; 2, King, as above; 3, over the other two<br />

crests. A griffin passant Argent beaked and legged Or, for Wentworth.<br />

Supporters. Two griffins rampant Argent, beaked and legged Or, collared per pale Azure and Gules<br />

The elder brother <strong>of</strong> this 2 nd Earl, Thomas, 5 th Baron King, (d.1779) married Catherine, daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> John Troye, one <strong>of</strong> the sovereign<br />

council <strong>of</strong> Brabant, whence the Troye quartering <strong>of</strong> Or three martlets Proper.<br />

* His brother Lionel Fortescue King, (1865-1929), who resumed the name and arms <strong>of</strong> King only, succeeded as 3 rd Earl <strong>of</strong> Lovelace, Viscount<br />

Ockham, and Baron <strong>of</strong> Ockham. The present holder <strong>of</strong> the titles is Peter Axel William Locke King, 5 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Lovelace, (b.1951).<br />

KING Impaled by Atwood, qv, in Sanderstead Church; Harman Atwood married, (ii), Joan, (d.1640), daughter <strong>of</strong> Arnold King, <strong>of</strong><br />

Beckenham, Kent.<br />

KING Sir George Anthony King, MA (Oxon), <strong>of</strong> Penn Road House, Croydon, Chief Master, Supreme Court Taxing Office, (1858-<br />

1928), was father <strong>of</strong> Anthony Highmore King, also <strong>of</strong> Penn Road House, barrister-at-law, (b.1890).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules two lions rampant Argent supporting a book Or in base a galley with sails furled <strong>of</strong> the last,<br />

Crest: Out <strong>of</strong> a crest coronet Or charged with three roses Gules a dexter hand erect the third and fourth fingers turned down Proper.<br />

Fairbairn records the Crest as: Out <strong>of</strong> an earl's coronet Or a demi ostrich with wings addorsed Argent beaked <strong>of</strong> the first and holding in its beak a<br />

KING Robert Curzon Henry Moss King <strong>of</strong> Harcourt House, Camberley, (1871-1929), was elder son <strong>of</strong> Robert Moss King, DL, JP,<br />

BA (Oxon), ICS, <strong>of</strong> Ashcott Hill, Bridgwater, Somerset, (1832-1903), and descended from the Very Rev. James King, Dean <strong>of</strong> Raphoe, married<br />

KING-FARLOW John King King-Farlow, FSAA, <strong>of</strong> 90 King's Road, Richmond, Freeman <strong>of</strong> the City <strong>of</strong> London, Goldsmith, (1891-1965),<br />

grandson <strong>of</strong> John King Farlow, DL, <strong>of</strong> Wood Lee, Virginia Water, Lord <strong>of</strong> the Manor <strong>of</strong> Gatwick-Horley, Deputy Alderman and H M Lieutenant<br />

for the city <strong>of</strong> London, Master <strong>of</strong> the Worshipful Company <strong>of</strong> Wheelwrights, (1818-94), assumed the surname <strong>of</strong> King-Farlow, 1928; he died sp.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Erminois between three knots a lion rampant holding in the dexter paw a cross pattée fitché all Sable on a canton Gules a<br />

sword and balance Argent.<br />

Crest: Issuant from a fern brake Proper a demi dragon holding in the dexter paw an arrow Or.<br />

descended Lieutenant-Colonel Algernon Robert Fitzhardinge Kingscote, MC, RA, <strong>of</strong> The Ridge, Horsell, Woking, (1888-1964).<br />
