SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

McALPINE Sir Robert McAlpine, 1 st Bart., JP, <strong>of</strong> Knott Park, (1847-1934), head <strong>of</strong> the firm <strong>of</strong> Sir Robert McAlpine and Sons, civil<br />

engineering contractors, was created Baronet, 1918. His grandson Sir Alfred Robert McAlpine, 3 rd Bart., (d. unmarried 1968), was <strong>of</strong> Felcourt,<br />

Lingfield, and <strong>of</strong> Malvenhyst, Woldingham. The present holder <strong>of</strong> the title is the latter's cousin, Sir Thomas George Bishop McAlpine, 4 th Bart.,<br />

(b.1901), son <strong>of</strong> William Hepburn McAlpine, <strong>of</strong> Tor Point, St. George's Hill Weybridge, (1871-1951).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per chevron Vert and Or two chevronels the one in chief Argent the other in base Azure.<br />

Crest: A cubit arm grasping a chaplet <strong>of</strong> pines fructed all Proper.<br />

McANDREW Fairbairn records James Child McAndrew <strong>of</strong> Grafham Grange, Guildford as using for<br />

MACARTNEY Earl <strong>of</strong> Macartney. George Macartney, Earl Macartney, (1737-1806), who bought Parkhurst in Abinger, 1786 and<br />

sold it 1795, was created Baron Macartney <strong>of</strong> Parkhurst and <strong>of</strong> Auchinleck in the Stewartry <strong>of</strong> Kirkcudbright, 1796.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or a stag trippant Gules attired Argent a bordure <strong>of</strong> the second.<br />

Crest: A naked arm couped below the elbow holding a branch <strong>of</strong> roses all Proper.<br />

Supporters: Dexter, A horse Argent ho<strong>of</strong>ed Or bridled and charged on the body with three roses Gules leaved Vert seeded Gold; Sinister,<br />

a buck Argent attired and unguled Or collared chequy <strong>of</strong> the first and Azure charged on the body with three trefoils slipped Vert and holding in<br />

the mouth a thistle slipped Proper.<br />

MACARTNEY The Rev. Sydney Parkyns Macartney, MA, (b.1843), son <strong>of</strong> Maxwell Macartney, MD, <strong>of</strong> Rosebrook, Co. Armagh, was Vicar<br />

<strong>of</strong> Felbridge, 1884-9.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or a buck trippant Gules attired and unguled Argent a bordure <strong>of</strong> the second charged with eight roses <strong>of</strong> the third.<br />

Crest: A cubit arm vested and cuffed bendy Gules and Or the hand bare holding a rose branch Proper.<br />

M'AUSLANE James M'Auslane <strong>of</strong> Wandsworth, (b.1854), eldest son <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Alexander M'Auslane, DD, and was father <strong>of</strong> James Stuart<br />

Colquhoun M'Auslane, (b.1889).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or a lion rampant Sable a chief chequy Azure and Argent.<br />

Crest: A dexter hand charged with a bezant holding up a ducal coronet within two laurel branches disposed orlewise all Proper.<br />

McCALMONT Robert McCalmont <strong>of</strong> Gatton Park, (dsp 1883), was eldest son <strong>of</strong> Hugh McCalmont <strong>of</strong> Abbeylands, Co. Antrim, (1765-<br />

Crest: A griffin's head erased Proper charged with a fleur-de-lys Or.<br />

MacCARTIE Gerald de Courcy MacCartie <strong>of</strong> Shrub Hill, Dorking, Captain, 4 th Battalion Princess <strong>of</strong> Wales' Own Yorkshire Regiment,<br />

(b.1867), 3 rd son <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Joseph McCarty, Vicar <strong>of</strong> Witton, Yorkshire, <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Carrignavar, Co. Cork, who changed his name to<br />

MacCartie.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a stag trippant Gules attired and unguled Or.<br />

Crest: A dexter arm couped below the elbow erect cloaked with mail Argent and hand holding a newt all Proper. (BLG8)<br />

McCLINTOCK Alexander Elsmere McClintock, BA, MSc (TCD), <strong>of</strong> 38 Couchmore Avenue, Hinckley Wood, geneticist with the Milk<br />

Marketing Board, (b.1947), 3 rd son <strong>of</strong> Major Elsmere McClintock <strong>of</strong> Brook House, Co. Tyrone, (b.1915), and descended from John McClintock,<br />

<strong>of</strong> Hampstead Hall, Co. Derry, (d.1804).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per pale Gules and Azure a chevron Ermine between three escallops Argent.<br />

Crest: A lion passant Proper.<br />

McCRACKEN Harold Davey McCracken <strong>of</strong> Worcester Park, (b.1846), son <strong>of</strong> John James McCracken, (1802-66).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or a tower Sable on a chief <strong>of</strong> the last a horseshoe between two spurs inverted <strong>of</strong> the field.<br />

Crest: In front <strong>of</strong> a horse's head couped Sable bridled Argent two swords in saltire Or.<br />

MACDONALD Sir Alexander Macdonald, 1 st Bart., <strong>of</strong> East Sheen, (d.1826), Chief Baron <strong>of</strong> the Court <strong>of</strong> Exchequer, 4 th son <strong>of</strong> Sir Alexander<br />

Macdonald, 7 th Bart., (1711-46), was created Baronet, 1813. The title became extinct on the death, (sp 1919), <strong>of</strong> Sir Archibald John Macdonald,<br />

4 th and last Bart.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1, Argent a lion rampant Gules; 2, Or a hand in armour holding a cross crosslet fitché Gules; 3, Or a row galley or<br />

lymphad the sails furled Sable; 4, Argent a salmon naiant in fess Proper.<br />
