NOAKES Wickham Noakes, JP, <strong>of</strong> Selsdon Park, Croydon, (b.1840), eldest son <strong>of</strong> John Tompsett Oakes, and was High Sheriff <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Surrey</strong>, 1907.<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Per pale Argent and Gules a fess invected between two leopards' faces in chief and a rose in base all counterchanged.<br />
Crest: A plate thereon a leopard's face Gules between two roses Argent barbed and seeded Proper.<br />

the Barony <strong>of</strong> North <strong>of</strong> Kirtling passed to the Norths, later Earls <strong>of</strong> Guildford, qv. Descended from Roger North, 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Thomas North,<br />
(d.1495), <strong>of</strong> Walkeringham, Nottinghamshire. The 1 st Baron, Edward North, (d.1564), was a famous lawyer, and his 2 nd son, Sir Thomas North,<br />
the translator <strong>of</strong> Plutarch.<br />

co-heir <strong>of</strong> George North, (d.1834), 3 rd Earl <strong>of</strong> Guildford, whose husband, John Sidney Doyle, (2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Sir Charles William Doyle, whose<br />
<strong>Arms</strong> were Argent three buck heads erased Proper within a bordure counter compony Or and Azure) took the name and <strong>Arms</strong> <strong>of</strong> North in 1838.<br />
