SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />
SHADWELL The Rt. Hon. Sir Lancelot Shadwell, MA, Hon. LL.D (Cantab), <strong>of</strong> The Elms, (1779-1850), the last Vice-Chancellor <strong>of</strong><br />
England, was eldest son <strong>of</strong> Lancelot Shadwell <strong>of</strong> Lincoln's Inn, barrister-at-law, and was descended from Thomas Shadwell <strong>of</strong> Lyndon,<br />
Staffordshire, who in 1537 received a grant <strong>of</strong> the following:<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Per pale Or and Azure on a chevron between three annulets four escallops all counterchanged.<br />
Crest: A demi griffin Proper. (VEW; BGA)<br />
SHAFTO Major Mark Shafto, The Royal Scots, <strong>of</strong> Little Swanburn, Haslemere, (b.1905), son <strong>of</strong> Captain Arthur Duncombe Shafto,<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Gules on a bend Argent three mullets Azure (Shafto); 2 and 3, Per chevron engrailed Gules and Argent<br />
three talbots' heads counterchanged (Duncombe).<br />
Crest: A salamander reguardant per pale Vert and Sable pierced through the breast with a spear Proper in the mouth a cross crosslet<br />

SHAFTO Delaval Shafto <strong>of</strong> Wandsworth, also <strong>of</strong> New Southgate, Middlesex, (1847-1925), was son <strong>of</strong> John Delaval Shafto <strong>of</strong> Barnard<br />
Castle, Co. Durham, (1812-74), and descended from William Shafto <strong>of</strong> Bavington, Northumberland, (living 1441). He inherited Bavington Hall,<br />
1902, but died spm. (NCH iv 419-20; the late W P Headley's MS notes on the Shafto families)<br />

Crest: Upon a chapeau Gules turned up Ermine an eagle wings expanded and distended Or collared and chained Sable.<br />

From the monument in Kingston Church to Mary, (d.Sep 29, 1624), daughter <strong>of</strong> Charles Scott <strong>of</strong> Kent, and wife <strong>of</strong> Sir Robert Sharpeigh. Her<br />
paternal coat was Argent three catherine wheels Sable with a bordure engrailed Gules.<br />
SHAW <strong>of</strong> Haslington in Barthomley, Cheshire and <strong>of</strong> Southwark.<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a chevron between three lozenges Ermines.<br />
Crest: A sheaf <strong>of</strong> arrows, one in pale and six in saltire, Or, barbed and flighted Argent, and bound with a belt Gules buckled <strong>of</strong> the<br />
first.<br />
