Newdigate <strong>of</strong> Ockley and Wootton, descended William Margesson or Margetson, <strong>of</strong> Ockley, (1686-1763), who married, 1712, Mary, sister and<br />

heir <strong>of</strong> William Whitebread <strong>of</strong> Offington, Sussex. Their grandson, William Margesson <strong>of</strong> Ockley and Offington, (1757-1843), High Sheriff <strong>of</strong><br />

Sussex 1805, was father <strong>of</strong> the Rev. William Margesson <strong>of</strong> Vann and Oakhurst, also <strong>of</strong> Wooldringfold, Sussex, (1792-1871), Rector <strong>of</strong><br />

Whatlington and Vicar <strong>of</strong> Mountfield, Sussex.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarter, 1 and 4, Sable a lion passant guardant Argent a chief engrailed Or (Margesson); 2, Gules three lions' gambs erased<br />

Argent (Newdigate); 3, Argent a chevron Sable between three hinds' heads erased Gules (Whitebread).<br />

magistrate, (1894-1958), was son <strong>of</strong> Brigadier-General Charles John Markham, CBE, (1862-1927). Of the same family, Edwyn Guy Markham,<br />

JP, BA (Oxon), (1877-1931), elder son <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant-General Sir Edwin Markham, KCB, RA, (1833-1918), was at one time <strong>of</strong> Cornwall Lodge,<br />

Kingston Hill.<br />

maidens' heads couped at the shoulders Argent crined Or.<br />

Crest: Between two roses Argent seeded Or barbed Vert a maiden's head couped at the shoulders Proper crined also Gold the neck<br />

encircled with a garland <strong>of</strong> roses as in the arms.<br />
