WONTNER Arthur Giles Irvine Wontner, MA (Oxon), <strong>of</strong> 14 Bemish Road, Putney, solicitor, Legal Assistant, New Scotland Yard,<br />

(b.1936), elder son <strong>of</strong> Sir Hugh Walter Kingswell Wontner, CVO, JP, <strong>of</strong> Barscobe Castle, Kirkcudbrightshire, and <strong>of</strong> Hedson Priory,<br />

Buckinghamshire.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: (In England). Argent a chevron Sable between in chief two crosses pattée convexed Gules voided <strong>of</strong> the field and in base a<br />

lion rampant guardant <strong>of</strong> the third grasping in the sinister paw a lamb Proper a chief Azure thereon three wolves' heads erased Or.<br />

Crest: A lion rampant Gules holding between the forepaws an actor's mask Sable.<br />

these arms, (but with A ship in full sail Proper, for crest) were confirmed in 1775.<br />

WOODHOUSE The Rev. Arthur Chorley Woodhouse, MA (Cantab), (1854-1944), Curate <strong>of</strong> St. Mary's, Battersea, 1878-82, and Vicar <strong>of</strong> St.<br />

Mark's, Battersea Rise, 1883-90, was son <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Frederick Charles Woodhouse, MA (Cantab), (1827-1905), and grandson <strong>of</strong> George<br />

Edward Woodhouse <strong>of</strong> Exeter, Devon, (1794-1864), from whom descended also the Rev. Reginald Illingworth Woodhouse, MA (Cantab), Vicar<br />

<strong>of</strong> Merstham, (1854-1922), and Henry Alfred Woodhouse MA (Oxon), <strong>of</strong> Haslemere, later <strong>of</strong> Orchard Lodge, Woking, (b.1883), father <strong>of</strong><br />

Ronald Michael Woodhouse, BA (Oxon), <strong>of</strong> Tankards, Wonersh, (b.1927).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules a cross between twelve cross crosslets Or.<br />

Crest: Within a ducal coronet Or a mount Vert issuant therefrom a cross crosslet Gold.<br />

WOODROFFE <strong>of</strong> Poyle House in Seale, from 1581 to 1779. Extinct 1779. Descended from Sir Nicholas Woodr<strong>of</strong>fe, (d.May 18,<br />

1598), Lord Mayor <strong>of</strong> London in 1579, son <strong>of</strong> David Woodr<strong>of</strong>fe, Sheriff <strong>of</strong> London, 1554, son <strong>of</strong> John Woodr<strong>of</strong>fe <strong>of</strong> Uffculme, Devon.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules on a chevron Argent three stag heads erased Sable, a chief per fess nebuly <strong>of</strong> the third and second. *<br />

Crest: A dexter arm embowed vested with leaves Vert, in the hand three slips <strong>of</strong> honeysuckle all Proper.<br />

From the brasses in Seale Church to Sir Nicholas, the Lord Mayor and to Sir David Woodr<strong>of</strong>fe, (d.Feb 13, 1603), eldest son <strong>of</strong> Sir Nicholas.<br />

As borne at the <strong>Surrey</strong> Visitation by Robert Woodr<strong>of</strong>fe, son <strong>of</strong> Sir David.<br />

William Billinghurst, great nephew <strong>of</strong> George Woodr<strong>of</strong>fe, (d.1779), took the name and arms <strong>of</strong> Woodr<strong>of</strong>fe and was Sheriff <strong>of</strong> <strong>Surrey</strong> in 1792,<br />

but the family became extinct on the death <strong>of</strong> his brother in 1854.<br />

* (VCHS ii 618) records the arms as: Gules on a chevron Argent three harts' heads erased <strong>of</strong> the field a chief party wavy Sable and Argent. The<br />

arms, incorrectly repainted, are impaled by Markland on a monument in Soberton Church, Hampshire, commemorating Jane, (d.1688, aged 30),<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> George Woodr<strong>of</strong>fe <strong>of</strong> Poyle, and wife <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Abraham Markland, Rector <strong>of</strong> Soberton and Prebendary <strong>of</strong> Winchester.<br />

WOODROUFFE SMITH Thomas Woodrouffe Smith <strong>of</strong> Stockwell Park, had a daughter and heir Maria Woodrouffe, (d.1854, aged 59) who<br />

married, 1833, as his first wife, George Head Head, JP, <strong>of</strong> Rickerby House, Cumberland, and Sprowston Hall, Norfolk, banker (d.1876, aged 81).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong> .... on a chevron .... three stags' heads erased .... a chief .... charged with five billets .... (CFH)<br />

As borne on an escutcheon <strong>of</strong> pretence in Stanwix Church, Cumberland.<br />
