WOLFE The Rev. Edward John Wolfe, Vicar <strong>of</strong> St. Thomas', Streatham Hill, (1858-1933), was 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> the Ven. John Charles<br />

Wolfe, DD, Archdeacon <strong>of</strong> Clogher, (1812-71), descended from Richard Wolfe, (will proven 1679), who settled in Ireland.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent three wolves' heads erased Sable ducally gorged Or.<br />

Crest: A wolf's head erased Sable ducally gorged Or.<br />

Motto: Pro patria more. (IFR)<br />

WOLFE-BARRY Eric Gordon Wolfe-Barry <strong>of</strong> Hook Heath, Woking, (b.1886), son <strong>of</strong> Sir John Wolfe Wolfe-Barry, KCB, DL, LL.D, FICE,<br />

FRS, (1836-1918).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or three bars gemel Azure over all a pale invected Ermine thereon a portcullis with chains Sable.<br />

Crest: A griffin Gules wings elevated and addorsed barry <strong>of</strong> six Or and Azure in its mouth a rose Argent leaved and slipped Proper<br />

resting the dexter claw on a portcullis as in the arms.<br />

Sir John Wolfe-Barry, who was youngest son <strong>of</strong> Sir Charles Barry, qv, and who assumed the additional surname Wolfe in 1898, was a<br />

distinguished engineer responsible for the Tower Bridge, Blackheath, Barry Dock and Railways, Kew Bridge, <strong>Surrey</strong> Commercial Dock,<br />

Grangemouth Dock, and many other important works.<br />

WOLLASTON Francis Wollaston, FRS, LL.B <strong>of</strong> Charterhouse Square, (1694-1774), descended from Thomas Wollaston <strong>of</strong> Perton,<br />

Staffordshire, from the time <strong>of</strong> Henry VII, had issue, amongst others, besides a 4 th son the Rev. George Wollaston, MA (Cantab), FRS, <strong>of</strong><br />

Richmond, (1738-1826), an eldest son the Rev. Francis Wollaston, LL.B (Cantab), FRS, <strong>of</strong> Charterhouse Square, Canon and Precentor <strong>of</strong> St.<br />

David's, (d.1815). The latter had issue, amongst others, besides George Hyde Wollaston <strong>of</strong> Clapham Common, (1765-1841), another son Henry<br />

Septimus Hyde Wollaston <strong>of</strong> Welling, Kent, (1776-1867), from whom descends Henry Woods Wollaston, BA (Cantab), <strong>of</strong> Ashtead House,<br />

Ashtead, barrister-at-law, (b.1916), 3 rd son <strong>of</strong> Sir Gerald Woods Wollaston, KCB, KCVO, MA, LL.M (Cantab), Garter Principal King <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arms</strong>,<br />

(1874-1957).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Argent three mullets pierced Sable (Wollaston); 2 and 3, Azure on a chevron Or between three swans<br />

Argent as many cinquefoils Gules (Charlton).<br />

Crest: Out <strong>of</strong> a mural crown Or a demi griffin segreant Argent holding a pierced mullet Sable.<br />

WOLSELEY Fox-Davis records Sir Charles Michael Wolseley, 9 th Bart., <strong>of</strong> Wolseley, Staffordshire, DL, JP, (1846-1931), as <strong>of</strong> Sunridge,<br />

Sutton, Guildford. Of the same family Mervyn Joseph Witham Wolseley <strong>of</strong> Whitmoor House, Sutton Park, (1873-1956), who married Dorothy<br />

Mary, (d.1956), eldest daughter <strong>of</strong> Philip Witham <strong>of</strong> Whitmoor House, qv, was son <strong>of</strong> Edward Talbot Wolseley <strong>of</strong> Maryland, Ascot, Berkshire,<br />

(1848-1935), and grandson <strong>of</strong> Sir Charles Wolseley, 8 th Bart., (1813-54).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a talbot passant Gules.<br />

Crest: Out <strong>of</strong> a ducal coronet Or a wolf's head erased Proper.<br />

WOLSEY For some time after his fall, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, MA, DD (Oxon), Archbishop <strong>of</strong> York, (c 1475-1530), lived in the<br />

mansion at Esher whose remains bear the name <strong>of</strong> 'Wolsey's Tower'.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable on a cross engrailed Argent a lion passant Gules between four leopards' faces Azure on a chief Or a rose <strong>of</strong> the third<br />

between two Cornish choughs Proper.<br />

Crest: From a coronet Or a lion's face Azure.<br />

Supporters: Two angels.<br />

Motto: Dominus mihi ad Jutor<br />

Device: On a mount Vert a griffin erect per fess gules and Or holding in the dexter claw the golden staff <strong>of</strong> the Chancellor and in the<br />

WOMBWELL <strong>of</strong> Wombwell, Yorkshire, and <strong>of</strong> Sherwood Lodge in Battersea. Baronet, Aug 26, 1778.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules a bend between six unicorn heads couped Argent.<br />

Crest: An unicorn head couped Argent.<br />

The 1 st baronet, Sir George, (d.1816), * (son <strong>of</strong> Roger Wombwell <strong>of</strong> Barnsley, Yorkshire, 3 rd son <strong>of</strong> John Wombwell, 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> George<br />

Wombwell <strong>of</strong> Wombwell), was Chairman <strong>of</strong> the East India Company and bought back Wombwell which had been alienated from the family<br />

since 1761.<br />

* Sir George Wombwell, 1 st Bart., died 1780, not 1816, as stated by Field; it was his widow Susannah, only daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir Thomas Rawlinson,<br />

Lord Mayor <strong>of</strong> London, 1746, who died 1816. From them descended Michael Henry Wombwell <strong>of</strong> Fairways, Crastock, Woking, (b.1907).<br />
