<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure a chevron Or surmounted by another couped Sable between three wood pigeons Proper each charged with a pellet.<br />

Crest: Out <strong>of</strong> park pales alternately Argent and Sable charged with three escallops in fess Or a pine tree fructed Proper.<br />

PENNEFETHER Sir John de Fonblanque Pennefether, 1 st and last Bart, JP, <strong>of</strong> Lyne Place, Virginia Water, (1856-1933), was created Baronet,<br />

1924.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per fess Or and Gules a bend Ermine.<br />

Crest: A lion sejant Argent supporting an oval shield <strong>of</strong> the arms.<br />

PEPLER Sir George Lionel Pepler, CB, FRICS, <strong>of</strong> 49 Rivermead Court, Hurlingham (1882-1959), was Chief Planning Inspector,<br />

Ministry <strong>of</strong> Heath, 1919-43, and President <strong>of</strong> the Town Planning Institute, 1919 and 1949. He was knighted 1948.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Vert a cross Or quarter pierced <strong>of</strong> the field and charged with four towers Sable.<br />

Crest: A sheaf <strong>of</strong> pepper Proper between two masons' squares Or.<br />

PEPYS Earl <strong>of</strong> Cottenham, Viscount Crowhurst. Sir William Weller Pepys, 2 nd Bart., (d. unmarried 1845), bought the<br />

manor <strong>of</strong> Bursted in Oxted and was succeeded by his brother Sir Charles Christopher Pepys, 3 rd Bart., (1781-1851), Lord High Chancellor <strong>of</strong><br />

England, 1836-41 and 1846-50, who was created Baron Cottenham <strong>of</strong> Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, 1836, and Viscount Crowhurst <strong>of</strong> Crowhurst<br />

and Earl <strong>of</strong> Cottenham, 1850. The 3 rd and 4 th Earls were <strong>of</strong> Tandridge Court, Godstone. The present holder <strong>of</strong> the titles is Sir Kenelm Charles<br />

Everard Digby Pepys, 8 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Cottenham, (b.1948).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable on a bend Or between two nags heads erased Argent three fleurs-de-lys <strong>of</strong> the field.<br />

Crest: A camel's head erased Or bridled lined ringed and gorged with a ducal coronet Sable.<br />

Supporters: On either side a horse Argent bridled and gorged with a ducal coronet Sable pendant therefrom an escutcheon Or charged<br />

with a fleur-de-lys <strong>of</strong> the second.<br />

Arden, Warwickshire, Jul 20, 1803. Descended from Charles George Perceval, 2 nd Baron Arden <strong>of</strong> Lohore and 1 st Baron Arden <strong>of</strong> Arden * (elder<br />

brother <strong>of</strong> the Rt. Hon. Spencer Perceval, the Premier assassinated in the House <strong>of</strong> Commons, May 11, 1812), son <strong>of</strong> John Perceval, 2 nd Earl <strong>of</strong><br />

Egmont, by his 2 nd wife, Catherine Compton, who was created Baroness Arden <strong>of</strong> Lohore with remainder to her heirs male.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a chief indented Gules three crosses patty <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />

Crest: Out <strong>of</strong> a ducal coronet Or a bear head Sable muzzled <strong>of</strong> the second. **<br />

Supporters: Two griffins Azure semy <strong>of</strong> fleur-de-lys Or, beaked, ducally gorged and chained <strong>of</strong> the second.<br />

On the death <strong>of</strong> Henry Perceval, 5 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Egmont, in 1841, George Perceval, (d.1874), <strong>of</strong> Nork, 3 rd Baron Arden, succeeded to the titles <strong>of</strong> the<br />

elder line <strong>of</strong> the family, ie Baronet, Sep 9, 1661; Baron Perceval <strong>of</strong> Burton, Co. Cork, Apr 21, 1715; Viscount Perceval <strong>of</strong> Kantush, Co. Cork,<br />

Feb 25, 1723; Earl <strong>of</strong> Egmont, Nov 6, 1733; Baron Lovel and Holland <strong>of</strong> Enmore, May 7, 1762; and to its amorial bearings:<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: as above.<br />

Crest: A thistle erect leaved Proper.<br />

Supporters: Dexter. An antelope Argent, attired and unguled Or, ducally gorged and chained <strong>of</strong> the last. Sinister, A stag Sable, attired and<br />

unguled Or, ducally gorged and chained <strong>of</strong> the last - each supporter holding in the mouth a thistle Proper.<br />

Motto: as above with the addition <strong>of</strong> 'Yvery' in a scroll over the crest.<br />

Two eagles Sable, however, had been confirmed to the first Earl <strong>of</strong> Egmont as supporters on Apr 16, 1740, by Greene, Garter, and Mawson,<br />

The Earldom <strong>of</strong> Egmont has been dormant since 1929.<br />

Perceval, (1550-1620), who obtained much land in Ireland and was ancestor also <strong>of</strong> the Earls <strong>of</strong> Egmont, qv. From him descended also the Very<br />

Rev. William Perceval, Archdeacon <strong>of</strong> Cashel and Dean <strong>of</strong> Emly, (1671-1734), ancestor <strong>of</strong> Captain Charles John Perceval, RA, <strong>of</strong> Bridgeham<br />

Lodge, Broadbridge Lane, Smallfield, (b.1913), son <strong>of</strong> Colonel Charles Cecil Perceval, CBE, RE, (1866-1937).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a chief indented Gules three crosses pattée <strong>of</strong> the field.<br />

Crest: A thistle erect leaved Proper.<br />
