SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

ONSLOW <strong>of</strong> Onslow, {Shrewsbury},Shropshire, then after 1549, <strong>of</strong> Knoll in Cranleigh, and, since 1642, <strong>of</strong> West Clandon Park.<br />

Baronet, Oct 12, 1687, by virtue <strong>of</strong> the patent <strong>of</strong> baronetcy granted Nov 21, 1660, to Sir Thomas Foote, Lord Mayor <strong>of</strong> London, 1649, (d.1687),<br />

father-in-law <strong>of</strong> Arthur Onslow, (d.1688), Baron Onslow <strong>of</strong> Onslow and Clandon, Jun 19, 1716. Baron Cranley <strong>of</strong> Imbercourt, May 20, 1776.<br />

Viscount Cranley <strong>of</strong> Cranley and Earl <strong>of</strong> Onslow, Jun 19, 1801. *<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a fess Gules between six Cornish choughs Sable. **<br />

Crest: An eagle[falcon] Sable preying upon a partridge Or. ***<br />

Supporters: Two falcons close Proper belled Or.<br />

Mottoes: Festina lente. Semper fidelis.<br />

Of this family was Arthur Onslow, (d.1768). Speaker <strong>of</strong> the House <strong>of</strong> Commons, 1728-61, son <strong>of</strong> Foote Onslow, (d.1710), son <strong>of</strong> Sir Arthur<br />

Onslow, 1 st Bart.<br />

* The present representative <strong>of</strong> the family is Michael William Coplestone Onslow, 7 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Onslow, <strong>of</strong> Temple Court, Clandon Park, (b.1938),<br />

who succeeded his father the 6 th Earl on the latter's death, 1971.<br />

Of the same family were the Onslows <strong>of</strong> Purford and <strong>of</strong> Drengwicke, (BLG6), and the Onslows <strong>of</strong> Stoke Park (BLG5).<br />

** The <strong>Arms</strong> are impaled by Guinness, qv, on a tablet at Clandon Park commemorating Gwendolen Florence Mary, Countess <strong>of</strong> Iveagh, CBE,<br />

(1881-1966). On a hatchment at Clandon Park they are displayed as a quarterly coat, viz: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Quarterly, i and iv, Onslow, ii and<br />

iii, Argent on a bend Azure three martlets <strong>of</strong> the first; 2 and 3, Argent on a cross Azure a leopard's face Or (Bridges); impaling, Azure a chevron<br />

embattled counter-embattled Or (Hale). At Clandon Park there is also a grant <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arms</strong> to Sir Richard Onslow, 2 nd Bart., Baron Onslow, dated 2<br />

Jul 1716, with a quarterly coat, viz. Quarterly <strong>of</strong> eight, 1, Onslow; 2, Argent a lion rampant Sable; 3, Gules on a chevron Or three estoiles ..; 4,<br />

Argent on a chevron Sable three bezants; 5, Argent three bars Azure a canton <strong>of</strong> the first [sic]; 6, Argent on a bend Azure three martlets Or; 7,<br />

Sable two lions passant Argent debruised by two pallets Gules; 8, Argent a chevron Sable in dexter chief a trefoil slipped Sable; over all, on an<br />

escutcheon <strong>of</strong> pretence, Sable a bend wavy Argent between two dolphins embowed Or. (EXH)<br />

*** Burke records the Crest <strong>of</strong> Onslow, <strong>of</strong> West Clandon, as: A falcon Proper legged and belled Or preying on a partridge Proper. (BGA)<br />

ORBY [ARPE] <strong>of</strong> London, <strong>of</strong> Chertsey, <strong>of</strong> Burton Pedwardine, Lincolnshire, and <strong>of</strong> Crowland Abbey, Lincolnshire. Baronet, October 9,<br />

1658. Extinct 1735.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Ermine three chevrons Gules, on a canton <strong>of</strong> the second a lion passant guardant Or. (Gen. Arm.)<br />

As borne by Sir Thomas Orby, (d.1723), and Sir Charles Orby, (d.1735), both <strong>of</strong> St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, sons <strong>of</strong> Sir Thomas Orby <strong>of</strong> St.<br />

Paul's, Covent Garden and Crowland, son <strong>of</strong> Peter Arpe or Orby <strong>of</strong> Chertsey and Burton Pedwardine, son <strong>of</strong> Matthew Arpe <strong>of</strong> London.<br />

ORDE Roden Horace Powlett Orde, BA, <strong>of</strong> Rutherford, Teddington, (b.1867), son <strong>of</strong> Henry Powlett Shafto Orde, JP<br />

Thomas Lane Ormiston, MA (Oxon), IA, barrister-at-law, (b.1867), and Henry Lee Ormiston, MA, BCL (Oxon), Acting Judge <strong>of</strong> the High Court<br />

<strong>of</strong> Rangoon, (b.1874).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per saltire Gules and Argent in pale two anchors erect Or and as many pelicans wings elevated in fess <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />

Crest: In front <strong>of</strong> a sun rising in splendour from behind waves <strong>of</strong> the sea an anchor erect all Proper.<br />
