MARTEL Lieutenant-General Sir Giffard Le Quesne Martel, KCB, KBE, DSO, MC, MIMech.E, <strong>of</strong> Bulford Lodge, Heatherside,<br />

Camberley, (1889-1958), was son <strong>of</strong> Brigadier-General Sir Charles Philip Martel, CB, <strong>of</strong> Queenswood, Exmouth, Devon, (1861-1945).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or on a pile Gules between two stags heads cabossed Sable three mallets <strong>of</strong> the field.<br />

Crest: Issuant from a mural crown Or a grenade Sable fired Proper.<br />

MARTIN Admiral Thomas Martin, RN, <strong>of</strong> The Wilderness, <strong>Surrey</strong> and <strong>of</strong> Itonfield, Cumberland, later <strong>of</strong> Bitterne, Hampshire, (1787-<br />

1868), was 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Captain John Nickleson Martin <strong>of</strong> Wollaton, Nottinghamshire, (1758-1830).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Paly <strong>of</strong> six Or and Gules on a chevron Argent an anchor erect Sable on a chief <strong>of</strong> the second three martlets <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />

Crest: In front <strong>of</strong> a garb Or a martin cat statant Proper.<br />

The Coach House and 3 Willow Walk, Englefield Green, (1875-1963), were sons <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Charles Martin, (1840-1910), Warden <strong>of</strong> Radley<br />

College, 1870-79, and Rector <strong>of</strong> Dartington, 1890-1910, and descended from the Rev. Joseph Martin, <strong>of</strong> Ham Court, Worcestershire, (1757-<br />

1828).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Paly <strong>of</strong> six Erminois and Azure on a chief engrailed Gules three martlets Argent.<br />

Crest: On a mount Vert a marten passant Proper resting the dexter foot on a bezant.<br />

MARTINEAU David Martineau <strong>of</strong> Stockwell Common, Clapham, brewer and sugar refiner, (1754-1841), descended from Gason Martineau<br />

<strong>of</strong> Bergerac, Dordogne, (c.1655-1726), a Huguenot who fled to England, 1685, had issue, amongst others, a 3 rd son Charles Martineau <strong>of</strong> Tulse<br />

Hill, Norwood, sugar refiner, (1795-1847), ancestor <strong>of</strong> the Martineaus <strong>of</strong> Esher, a 2 nd son George Martineau <strong>of</strong> Tulse Hill, and <strong>of</strong> Foxholes,<br />

Weybridge, sugar refiner, (1793-1857), father <strong>of</strong> David Martineau <strong>of</strong> 122 King's Avenue, Clapham Park, sugar refiner, (1827-1911), whose 2 nd<br />

son Sydney Martineau <strong>of</strong> London, (1863-1945) obtained a grant <strong>of</strong> arms * for himself and the other descendants <strong>of</strong> his great-grandfather, David<br />

Martineau, (1754-1841), above. His 3 rd son, Major Frederick Alan Martineau, MBE, JP, MA (Cantab), <strong>of</strong> Valley End House, Chobham,<br />

(b.1904).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Paly <strong>of</strong> six Or and Gules per fess counterchanged on a fess also Gules three roses Argent barbed and seeded Proper.<br />

Marwick, DL, JP, LL.D (Glasgow), (1826-1908), Town Clerk <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh, 1860-73, and <strong>of</strong> Glasgow, 1873-1903.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per fess Argent and Azure a saltire wavy counterchanged between a castle triple-towered Sable masoned Argent thereon a<br />

redbreast Proper * in chief and an otter's head erased <strong>of</strong> the first in base.<br />

Crest: A boar passant Azure.<br />

MASSIE Edward Richard Massie, JP, <strong>of</strong> The Barn, Frensham, Farnham, (1845-1935), Lord <strong>of</strong> the Manor <strong>of</strong> Coddington, Cheshire,<br />

was eldest son <strong>of</strong> Admiral Thomas Leche Massie, RN, <strong>of</strong> Coddington, (1802-98).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly Gules and Or in the first and fourth quarters three fleurs-de-lys Argent a canton Azure.<br />
