MANDEVILLE Earl <strong>of</strong> Essex. Ge<strong>of</strong>frey de Mandeville, Earl <strong>of</strong> Essex, (dsp 1216), held the manor <strong>of</strong> Long Ditton which his brother and<br />

heir William de Mandeville, Earl <strong>of</strong> Essex, (dsp 1227), seems to have granted to the priory <strong>of</strong> St. Mary Spital without Bishopsgate. The<br />

Mandevilles also held the manor <strong>of</strong> Clapham. (VCHS iii 518, iv 38)<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly Or and Gules (GEC; FFC)<br />

MANGLES <strong>of</strong> Woodbridge.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or a bend Vair between two crosses verdé voided Sable.<br />

MANN Lieutenant-Colonel Deane Mann <strong>of</strong> Ladnam, Hillbrow Road, Esher, (b.1884), son <strong>of</strong> William Henry Mann, MA, LL.B,<br />

(1856-97).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or on a chevron engrailed Ermine between three lions rampant Sable a trefoil <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />

Crest: Five spears Proper issuant from the top <strong>of</strong> a tower Or the tower charged with a trefoil Vert.<br />

MANNERS George Manners, Lord Roos, (1470-1513), acquired Field Place, Compton, by marriage, c.1490, to Anne, (1476-1526),<br />

daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> Sir Thomas St. Leger, qv. Their sons Thomas, Earl <strong>of</strong> Rutland, and Sir Richard Manners sold it 1542. (VCHS iii 20)<br />

MANSEL James Morton Mansel <strong>of</strong> Rose Cottage, Dormansland, (1876-1937), was 6 th son <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Owen Luttrell Mansel, MA<br />

(Cantab), (1827-1900), and descended from Sir William Mansel, 9 th Bart., (1739-1804), from whom descended also Algernon Lascelles Mansel,<br />

<strong>of</strong> Lammas, Esher, (1868-1942), elder son <strong>of</strong> Captain Arthur Edmund Mansel, 3 rd Hussars, <strong>of</strong> Grove House, Dorchester, {Dorset}, (1828-1905).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a chevron between three maunches Sable.<br />

Crest: A cap <strong>of</strong> maintenance inflamed on the top Proper.<br />

MANSELL <strong>of</strong> Guildford. Granted by Walker, Garter.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or three maunches Sable on a chief Gules a lion passant guardant Or. (BGA)<br />

MANSHIP John Manship a London merchant, (d.1749), bought the manor <strong>of</strong> Biggin and Tamworth, 1744, and was succeededby his son<br />

John Manship <strong>of</strong> Field Place, Compton, (d.c 1751), who sold the manor. He married Ann, daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> Richard Dowdeswell, and had a<br />

daughter and heir Anne, who married Simon Goodman Ewart, q.v.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure in base barry wavy Vert and Azure thereon a ship with three masts and in chief three estoiles Or. A version <strong>of</strong> these<br />

arms was quartered by the Norman family, Robert Norman having married Elizabeth, daughter <strong>of</strong> the above named Simon Goodman Ewart.<br />

MANT George Arthur Mant <strong>of</strong> Avenings, Chipstead, solicitor, (b.1896), son <strong>of</strong> Arthur French Mant, solicitor, (1861-1902).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Erminois a lion rampant Azure on a chief per pale Ermine and Gules an open book Proper clasped and garnished Or between<br />

a rose <strong>of</strong> the fourth and another Argent both barbed and seeded Proper.<br />

Crest: A demi lion rampant Argent holding between the paws a cross Calvary Sable.<br />

Motto: Lucerna pedibus meis. (FD7)<br />

MANT Of the same family, the Rt. Rev. Richard Mant, (1776-1869), Bishop <strong>of</strong> Down and Connor, and Dromore, at one time Rector<br />

<strong>of</strong> East Horsley, was father <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Frederick Woods Mant, MA, Rector <strong>of</strong> Armoy, Connor, previously Vicar <strong>of</strong> Egham, (b.1809).<br />

MARGARY Thomas Margary <strong>of</strong> Clapham, descended from the Huguenot family <strong>of</strong> De Marguerie, Marquis de Vassy in Normandy, had a<br />

grandson Major Alfred Robert Margary, JP, 54 th and 56 th Regiments <strong>of</strong> Chartham Park, Lingfield, (d.1892), who was succeeded by his son<br />

Colonel Alfred Robert Margary <strong>of</strong> Chartham Park, (b.1853), father <strong>of</strong> Ivan Donald Margary, (b.1896).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per fess Azure and Argent a pale counterchanged and three daisies slipped, two and one, <strong>of</strong> the second.<br />

Crest: Upon a mount Vert an arm in bend Proper holding a daisy slipped Argent.<br />
