SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

JAMES Gerard Bowes Kingston James <strong>of</strong> 94 Clarendon Drive, Putney, (b.1899), is presumably heir to his kinsman Sir Fullarton<br />

James, 6 th Bart., CBE, MA, (Cantab), (d.1955), but he has not yet established his claim as 7 th Bart.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, Vert and Gules a cross Argent charged with a ship in full sail Proper between four anchors erect Azure in the first<br />

and fourth quarters a dolphin naiant <strong>of</strong> the third between three cross crosslets Or in the second and third a lion passant guardant <strong>of</strong> the last<br />

between three trefoils slipped Argent.<br />

Crest: Issuing from a ducal coronet Or a swan Proper beak Gules holding therein a dart Gold feathered Argent pointed towards the<br />

breast.<br />

JARDINE Sir John Jardine, 1 st Bart., KCIE, JP, <strong>of</strong> Applegarth, Godalming, Bombay Civil Service, (1844-1919), was created Baronet,<br />

1916, and was succeeded in turn by his sons Sir John Eric Birdwood Jardine, 2 nd Bart., BA (Oxon), also <strong>of</strong> Applegarth, (1890-1924), and Major-<br />

General Sir Colin Arthur Jardine, 3 rd Bart., DSO, MC, RA, <strong>of</strong> Deepcut, St. George's Hill, Weybridge, (1892-1957). The latter was succeeded by<br />

his son Brigadier Sir Ian Liddell Jardine, 4 th Bart., OBE, MCE, <strong>of</strong> Coombe Place, Meonstoke, Hampshire, (b.1923).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules a saltire Argent charged in the centre point with a lotus flower Proper on a chief <strong>of</strong> the second six mullets <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />

Crest: A mullet <strong>of</strong> six points pierced Gules between two palm branches Proper.<br />

Baronet, 1922, and was High Sheriff <strong>of</strong> <strong>Surrey</strong>, 1934, and MP for Godalming, 1935. His elder son Sir Arnold Adrian Jarvis, 2 nd and last Bart.,<br />

MA (Cantab), FCA, <strong>of</strong> Admiral's Walk, Pirbright, (1904-65), High Sheriff <strong>of</strong> <strong>Surrey</strong>, 1950, died sp.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure a chevron between two martlets in chief and a cinquefoil in base all Or.<br />

Crest: In front <strong>of</strong> a cinquefoil Or a martlet Azure.<br />

JAY <strong>of</strong> Waverley Abbey in Farnham, and later <strong>of</strong> Dorking.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable three leopard faces erased Argent crowned Or. *<br />

Crest: Out <strong>of</strong> a coronet per pale Argent and Or a camel head issuing Sable besanty.<br />

From the brass in Farnham Church to Benedict Jay, (d.1586), <strong>of</strong> Waverley Abbey, Sergeant <strong>of</strong> the Woodyard to Queen Elizabeth I and as borne<br />

(SV1623) by William Jay <strong>of</strong> Dorking, son <strong>of</strong> Anthony Jay <strong>of</strong> Waverley Abbey, 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Benedict.<br />

JAY A monument in St. Mary Magdalene Church, Richmond, commemorates Margarite, (d.1646), widow <strong>of</strong> Thomas Jay, <strong>of</strong><br />

Middlesex, Commissary General to Charles I, parents <strong>of</strong> Thomas Jay, Captain <strong>of</strong> Horse.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: .... on a bend engrailed .... three roses ...: impaling, Quarterly, 1 and 4, .... two bars .... between three towers ...: 2 and 3 ....<br />

two chevrons .... within a bordure engrailed .... On the dexter side <strong>of</strong> the shield is a wolf statant, on the sinister a lion's paw holding a key.<br />

CB, 1 st Baron Gladwyn <strong>of</strong> Bramfield, Suffolk.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly Vert and Or in the first quarter a falcon close Argent belled <strong>of</strong> the second in the fourth quarter a lure <strong>of</strong> the third.<br />

JEFFREYS The Rev. John Jeffreys, DD, MA, (1771-1840), Rector <strong>of</strong> Barnes and Chaplain to the Prince <strong>of</strong> Wales, was son <strong>of</strong> the the<br />

Rev. John Jeffreys, DD, Canon <strong>of</strong> St. Paul's and <strong>of</strong> Christ Church, Oxford, Rector <strong>of</strong> Great Berkhamsted, {Hertfordshire}, (1718-98), and<br />

descended from Judge John Jeffreys, <strong>of</strong> Acton, Denbighshire, (d.1622).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Ermine a lion rampant and a canton Sable.<br />

Crest: A demi lion Or holding in the dexter paw a laurel wreath Proper.<br />
