WATSON Sir Arthur Townley Watson, 2 nd Bart., QC, MA (Cantab), (1830-1907), was <strong>of</strong> Reigate Lodge, Reigate.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure on a fess dancetté between three crescents Argent as many martlets Sable.<br />

Crest: A griffin's head erased Azure ducally crowned Or between two branches <strong>of</strong> palm Proper.<br />

Motto: PAOHMATA MAOHMATA (Sufferings are lessons). (BP58)<br />

WATSON James Cameron Watson <strong>of</strong> Guildford, (1871-1963), was 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Colonel Robert Samuel Watson, RA, (1846-1931), and<br />

descended from John Watson <strong>of</strong> Salkeld, Cumberland, (1615-75), who settled at Kilconner, Co. Carlow, 1658.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a chevron engrailed Azure between three martlets Sable as many crescents Or a bordure Azure charged with eight<br />

trefoils slipped also Or.<br />

Crest: Between sprays <strong>of</strong> shamrock Proper a griffin's head erased Argent about the neck a crown Or and in the beak a slip <strong>of</strong> bog<br />

cotton Proper.<br />

WATSON Sir Norman James Watson, 2 nd Bart., <strong>of</strong> Abesters, Reigate, (b.1897), High Sheriff <strong>of</strong> Berkshire, 1940, succeeded his father<br />

Sir William George Watson, 1 st Bart. <strong>of</strong> Sulhamstead, Berkshire, on the latter's death, 1930.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a chevron Azure between three martlets sable all within a bordure <strong>of</strong> the second charged with eight crescents <strong>of</strong> the<br />

first.<br />

Crest: A griffin's head erased sable gorged with a crown palisado Or holding in the beak a sprig <strong>of</strong> oak fructed Proper.<br />

WATSON The Hon. Robert Fraser Watson <strong>of</strong> Thankerton House, Windlesham, (1900-75), was 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> the first Baron Manton.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a chevron Azure between four martlets three in chief and one in base Sable a crescent between two roses <strong>of</strong> the<br />

field.<br />

Crest: A griffin passant Sable in front <strong>of</strong> an oak tree Proper.<br />

WATSON Earl <strong>of</strong> Rockingham. Lewis Watson, Baron and 1 st Earl <strong>of</strong> Rockingham, (1655-1724), acquired the manor <strong>of</strong><br />

Puttenden by marriage, 1677, to Catherine, (d.1696), daughter and coheir and in her issue sole heir <strong>of</strong> George Sondes, 1 st Earl <strong>of</strong> Feversham, qv.<br />

Their grandson Lewis, Viscount Sondes, 2 nd Earl <strong>of</strong> Feversham, (c.1714-45), sold the manor. (VCHS iv 307)<br />

WATSON The Ven. John James Watson, MA, DD (Oxon), (1767-1839), Archdeacon <strong>of</strong> St. Albans, 1816, Prebendary <strong>of</strong> St. Paul's,<br />

1825-39, elder son <strong>of</strong> John Watson <strong>of</strong> Tower Hill, wine merchant, served his first curacy at Epsom.<br />

WATT Andrew James Gibson Watt <strong>of</strong> 18 Granard Avenue, Putney, barrister-at-law, (b.1925), 3 rd son <strong>of</strong> Major James Miller Gibson<br />

Watt, JP, S Wales Borderers, <strong>of</strong> Doldowlod, Radnorshire, and Heathfield, Staffordshire, (1874-1929).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Barry <strong>of</strong> six Or and Azure over all a club in bend sinister surmounted by a caduceus saltirewise all Proper<br />

(Watt); 2 and 3, Argent on a fess engrailed between two keys fesswise wards downwards Azure a like key <strong>of</strong> the field (Gibson).<br />

WATTS William Mosley Watts <strong>of</strong> Byfield House, Barnes, (1786-1845), was elder son <strong>of</strong> the Rev. William Watts, MD, (who practised<br />

in Leicester before entering the church), and brother <strong>of</strong> Alaric Alexander Watts, the poet; and descended from Watts <strong>of</strong> Blakesley,<br />

Northamptonshire. (BLG5)<br />

WAY Lewis Way <strong>of</strong> Streatham and The Old Court, Richmond, (1698-1771), President <strong>of</strong> Guy's Hospital and Director <strong>of</strong> the South<br />

Sea Company, was eldest son <strong>of</strong> Benjamin Way <strong>of</strong> Walthamstow, Essex, merchant and shipowner in London, (1665-1709). From him descended<br />

Albert Way, DL, JP, MA (Cantab), FSA, <strong>of</strong> Wonham Manor, {Betchworth}, (1805-74), founder <strong>of</strong> the Royal Archaeological Institute and <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Archaeological Journal, and also Herbert William Lewis Way, JP, <strong>of</strong> Worfield Lodge, 20 Queen's Road, Kingston Hill, (1864-1937).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Azure three lucies hauriant in fess Argent; 2 and 3, Sable two bars bendy <strong>of</strong> six Argent and Gules.<br />
