SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

JOLLIFFE <strong>of</strong> Leek, Staffordshire, then <strong>of</strong> C<strong>of</strong>ton Hacket, Worcestershire, and later also <strong>of</strong> Hayton Castle, Cumberland and <strong>of</strong> Merstham<br />

Court. Baronet, Aug 20, 1821, Baron Hylton, July 19, 1866.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a pile Vert three dexter hands erect <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />

Crest: A cubit arm erect habited Vert charged with a pile Argent and holding a sword erect Proper, pomel and hilt Or.<br />

As confirmed to William Jollye alias Jolliffe <strong>of</strong> Leek, Aug 27, 1614, and borne at the Worcestershire Visitation, 1682-3, by Thomas Jolliffe, (the<br />

first to reside at C<strong>of</strong>ton), grandson <strong>of</strong> William Jollye <strong>of</strong> Leek. (Grazebrook i 320)<br />

The first Baron Hylton, (which title commemorates the marriage <strong>of</strong> William Jolliffe, (d.1802), and Eleanor, daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> Sir Richard<br />

Musgrave, Bart., <strong>of</strong> Hayton Castle, who had taken the name and arms <strong>of</strong> Hylton, his mother having been Anne, sister and co-heir <strong>of</strong> John Hylton,<br />

called Baron Hylton, <strong>of</strong> Hilton Castle, Co. Durham) bore the pile in the arms Azure and the hands Or gauntlets Or, and for crest A cubit arm<br />

erect in armour holding a broadsword all Proper, but the old coat and crest have now been resumed, with the addition <strong>of</strong> a cuff Argent to the arm<br />

in the crest.<br />

Supporters: Two lions gardant Azure each charged on the shoulder with three annulets, two and one, Or.<br />

Motto: Tant que je puis. (Grazebrook i 320; Peerage, 1938)<br />

The arms are now usually borne quartering Argent two bars Azure, and with a second crest, the head <strong>of</strong> Moses horned and radiated Proper, both<br />

for Hylton.<br />

JONES <strong>of</strong> Witley.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly Sable and Gules a cross Argent, in the first and fourth quarters three lance rests and in the second and third<br />

quarters as many cockatrices Or.<br />

As borne (SV1572) by Thomas Jones <strong>of</strong> Witley, son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Jones <strong>of</strong> Witley.<br />

But on the brass in Witley Church to Thomas Jones. Sewer <strong>of</strong> the Chamber to Henry VIII, who was appointed Keeper <strong>of</strong> the Park at Witley,<br />

1520, his coat is given simply as Three cocatrices. (SAC xxxiii 37)<br />

JONES The Rev. Inigo William Jones <strong>of</strong> Chobham Place, (d.1810), was 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Henry Jones <strong>of</strong> Bloomsbury Square, London,<br />

conveyancer.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Ermine a lion rampant Azure. (BLG8)<br />

JONES Sir Bertram Hyde Jones, KBE, <strong>of</strong> The White House, Sanderstead, later <strong>of</strong> Cape Town, South Africa, (1879-1961), was elder<br />

son <strong>of</strong> Edmund Isaiah Jones, (1840-1901).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure a cross flory voided between four pheons Or on a chief <strong>of</strong> the second two roses Gules barbed and seeded Proper.<br />

Crest: In front <strong>of</strong> a saltire flory Or a dexter arm embowed vested Azure cuffed Argent the hand grasping a scimitar Proper pommel<br />

and hilt Gold.<br />

Motto: Vincit qui se vincit. (BLG17)<br />

JONES Fairbairn records Robert Hesketh Jones <strong>of</strong> Belfort Park, Hill Rise, Croydon, as using for<br />

Crest: A boar's head couped close.<br />

Motto: Heb nevol nerth nid sicr saeth. (FBC)<br />

JONES Viscount Ranelagh. DPB1868 records Bridge House, Richmond, as one <strong>of</strong> the seats <strong>of</strong> Sir Thomas Henry Jones, 7 th<br />

and last Viscount Ranelagh, DL, (1812-85).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure on a cross between four pheons Or five mullets Gules.<br />

Crest: A dexter arm embowed in armour the hand grasping a dart point downwards Proper.<br />

Supporters: Two griffins wings elevated per fess Argent and Sable. (DPB)<br />

BGA records this achievement as that <strong>of</strong> Richard Jones, 1 st and last Earl <strong>of</strong> Ranelagh, (1641-1712), and gives the following for the 7 th Viscount,<br />

as does NEP:<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure a cross between four pheons points downwards Or.<br />

Crest: A dexter arm embowed in arm the hand in a gauntlet Proper grasping a dart Or.<br />

Supporters: Two griffins Erminois.<br />

Motto: Caelitus mihi vires.<br />

JONES see BENCE-JONES or HELSHAM-JONES<br />

JORDAN <strong>of</strong> Gatwick House in Charlwood. Extinct 1750.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable an eagle displayed in bend between two bendlets Argent, on a chief Or three almond leaves Vert.<br />

Crest: An almond branch, fructed Or, leaved Vert.<br />

As borne (SV1623) by William Jordan. (Harl. Ms 1561, fo 120) gives the crest as a Jordan almond tree, the trunk barry Argent and<br />

Gules, leaved Vert and fructed Or, and adds with reference to the coat, “The Cheife is now taken away by Sr Ri St George, Clarenceux” *<br />

Edmund Jordan, son <strong>of</strong> William, had a grant from Sir William Segar, Garter, Feb 18, 1628, <strong>of</strong> Azure crusilly and a lion rampant Or. Crest. A lion<br />

sejant sustaining a cross crosslet fitchy Or. (Harl. Ms 1561, fo 120)<br />

(Guillim, edit. 1660) gives the coat <strong>of</strong> Jordan <strong>of</strong> Gatwick as Sable an eagle displayed between two bendlets Argent, a sinister canton Or<br />

Or issuant resting on the sinister foot and holding in the dexter an eagle's head erased Sable. (BGA)<br />

JOWLES <strong>of</strong> Alkham.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: (granted 1620). Argent a tower triple-towered Gules between three pheons Sable.<br />

Crest: A tower Gules surmounted with eight broad arrows falling at the top, four and four, fretty in bend dexter and sinister. (BGA)<br />

Burke records the same arms and crest for JOWELES, <strong>of</strong> <strong>Surrey</strong> and Kent.<br />
