SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

NORTON, post LOWNDES-STONE-NORTON Captain Robert Thomas Lowndes Norton, Grenadier Guards, <strong>of</strong> Anningsley Park,<br />

(1839-95), son <strong>of</strong> the Rev. and Hon. James Norton, (1809-53), married, (i), 1862, Catherine Charlotte, (d.1882), granddaughter and heir <strong>of</strong><br />

William Francis Lowndes-Stone, DL, JP, <strong>of</strong> Brightwell Park, Oxfordshire, (1750-1830), and assumed the additional surnames Lowndes-Stone,<br />

1868.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Azure a maunch Ermine over all a bend Gules (Norton); 2, Argent three cinquefoils Sable pierced <strong>of</strong> the<br />

field a chief Azure (Stone); 3, Argent fretty Azure each point charged with a bezant on a canton Gules a leopard's head erased Or (Lowndes).<br />

Crests: 1, (Centre), A Moor's head affronté couped at the shoulders wreathed round the temples with laurel Proper and round the<br />

neck a torse Argent and Azure (Norton); 2, (Dexter), Out <strong>of</strong> a ducal coronet Or a griffin's head Ermine beaked Or between two wings <strong>of</strong> the last<br />

(Stone); 3, (Sinister), A leopard's head erased Or gorged with a wreath <strong>of</strong> laurel Proper (Lowndes).<br />

An earlier edition <strong>of</strong> Burke records the achievement as:<br />

NORTON-GRIFFITHS Lieutenant-Colonel Sir John Norton-Griffiths, KCB, DSO, <strong>of</strong> Wonham, Betchworth, (1871-1930), MP for<br />

Wednesbury, 1910-18, and for Wandsworth Central, 1918-24, was created Baronet, 1922. He was succeeded by his elder son Sir Peter Norton-<br />

Griffiths, 2 nd Bart., (b.1905).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Sable a flaming sword erect between two Griffins combattant Or (Griffiths); 2 and 3, Argent on a fess<br />

raguly between two fleurs-de-lys Azure a fleur-de-lys between two crescents Or (Norton).<br />

Crests: 1, A demi lion rampant Gules grasping in the paws a flaming sword erect as in the arms (Griffiths); 2, A dexter gauntlet<br />

closed Sable between two ostrich feathers Argent (Norton).<br />

NOTT-BOWER John Bower, DCL (Oxon), (1808-77), married, 1848, Charlotte, daughter <strong>of</strong> General Sir William Nott, GCB, and had issue<br />

Sir John William Nott-Bower, KCVO, JP, <strong>of</strong> 98 Church Road, Richmond, (1849-1939), Chief Constable <strong>of</strong> Liverpool, 1881-1902,<br />

Commissioner <strong>of</strong> Police for the City <strong>of</strong> London, 1902-25; and Sir Edmund Ernest Nott-Bower, KCB, <strong>of</strong> Kelstow, 72 King's Road, Richmond,<br />

(1863-1933), Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Inland Revenue.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Or a cross pattée Vert between four escallops two in chief and two in base Sable (Bower); 2, Argent two<br />

barrulets dancetté Sable between four pellets, two and two (Burrow); 3, Erminois on a bend engrailed with plain cotises Gules three mascles Or<br />

in the sinister point a unicorn's head erased <strong>of</strong> the second (Smith).<br />

Crest: A boar passant Argent semé <strong>of</strong> escallops Sable.<br />

NOWELL Ralph Machattie Nowell, CB, BA (Oxon), <strong>of</strong> 77 Albert Road, Wimbldeon Park and <strong>of</strong> Linton House, Skipton, Yorkshire,<br />

(b.1903), elder son <strong>of</strong> Walter Salmon Nowell, MA (Oxon), MRCS, LRCP, LDS, <strong>of</strong> St. Peter's House, Canterbury, (1867-1949).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent three covered cups Sable.<br />

Crest: An arm embowed in armour holding in the hand a flaming bomb Proper. (BLG17)<br />

NUGENT The Rev. Edmund Frederick Nugent, MA (Oxon), (1866-1950), 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Sir Edmund Charles Nugent, 3 rd Bart., (1839-<br />

1928), was Rector <strong>of</strong> SS Simon and Jude Roman Catholic Church, Streatham Hill, 1931-50.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Ermine two bars within a bordure engrailed Gules on a canton <strong>of</strong> the last a dagger erect Proper pommel and hilt Or.<br />

Crest: A cockatrice Vert gorged with a plain collar Or pendent therefrom an escutcheon Gules charged with a dagger erect as in the<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>.<br />

NUGENT Baron Nugent <strong>of</strong> Guildford. Nathaniel Hodges <strong>of</strong> Wimbledon, (d.1806), was father <strong>of</strong> George Stephen Nugent<br />

Hodges-Nugent, (c.1788-1874), who was grandfather <strong>of</strong> Colonel George Roubiliac Hodges Nugent, OBE, RA, <strong>of</strong> Churt, (1873-1935). He had<br />

issue, besides an elder son Peter George Hodges Nugent <strong>of</strong> Duns, Dunsfold, (b.1906), a younger son Sir George Richard Hodges Nugent, 1 st<br />

Bart., JP, <strong>of</strong> Blacknest Farm, Dunsfold, (b.1907), MP for Guildford, 1950-66, who was created Baronet, 1960, and a Life Peer as Baron Nugent<br />

<strong>of</strong> Guildford, <strong>of</strong> Dunsfold, <strong>Surrey</strong>, 1966.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Ermine two bars and a canton Gules.<br />

Crest: A cockatrice with wings expanded Vert charged on the breast with a rose Argent barbed and seeded Proper.<br />

Supporters: Dexter. A cockatrice wings addorsed Vert beaked combed and wattled Gules; Sinister. A swan wings addorsed Argent; each<br />
