JACKMAN Alderman Thomas Jackman was three times Mayor <strong>of</strong> Guildford. *<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per saltire Argent and Azure, (or Sable), in pale two eagles displayed <strong>of</strong> the second; impaling, Ermine on a bend Azure three<br />

birds Or on a canton Gules a crescent Or. (EXH)<br />

* (VCHS iii 548, 570) records him as giving £600 in 1785 to augment the endowment <strong>of</strong> Abbot's Hospital, Guildford<br />

JACKSON <strong>of</strong> Beach Hill, Bart., Extinct {No date given}<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules a fess between three shovellers tufted on the head and breast Argent each charged with a trefoil slipped Vert.<br />

Crest: A shoveller as in the arms.<br />

JACKSON Sir Thomas Graham Jackson, 1 st Bart., RA, MA , Hon. DCL (Oxon), Hon. LLD (Cantab), <strong>of</strong> Eagle House, Wimbledon,<br />

architect, (1835-1924), was created Baronet, 1913, and was succeeded by his elder son, Sir Hugh Nicholas Jackson, 2 nd Bart., (1881-1979),<br />

father <strong>of</strong> Sir Nicholas Fane St. George Jackson, 3 rd Bart., LRAM, ARCM, (b.1934).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Argent a greyhound, courant Ermines between three eagles' heads erased Sable (Jackson); 2 and 3, Sable<br />

three mullets pierced between two bendlets Or (Hippisley).<br />

Crest: A demi horse Argent gutté de sang maned and ho<strong>of</strong>ed Sable.<br />

JACKSON Sir Henry Jackson, 1 st and last Bart., <strong>of</strong> Wandsworth, MA, MB (Cantab), <strong>of</strong> 19 Putney Hill, (1875-1937), son <strong>of</strong> James<br />

Jackson, <strong>of</strong> Heywood, Lancashire, (1850-94), was created Baronet, 1935.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per chevron Or and Gules in chief two pheons <strong>of</strong> the second and in base a greyhound courant <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />

Crest: A demi greyhound supporting between the paws a caduceus Or.<br />

JACKSON Sir Willis Jackson, FRS, <strong>of</strong> Arden, 25 Manor Road, Cheam, (1904-70), Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Mechanical Engineering and Pro-Rector<br />

<strong>of</strong> Imperial College, London, was created a Life Peer as Baron Jackson <strong>of</strong> Burnley, {Lancashire}, 1967.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly per fess indented Or and Azure in the first and fourth quarters a rose Gules barbed and seeded Proper and in the<br />

second and third a thunderbolt Or.<br />

Crest: In front <strong>of</strong> a terrestrial globe Proper a torch erect Or inflamed Proper.<br />

Supporters: Dexter, An Indian habited in the court dress <strong>of</strong> Mysore; Sinister, A notable <strong>of</strong> the Eastern Region <strong>of</strong> Nigeria habited in<br />

traditional robes and head-dress; both Proper.<br />

JACOBS Fox-Davies in 1929 recorded Joseph Henry Jacobs, son <strong>of</strong> Chapman Jacobs, <strong>of</strong> Swansea, as <strong>of</strong> Manor Heath, Knowle Hill,<br />

Woking.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: (granted 1921). Azure on a pile Ermine between on the dexter a rose and on the sinister two triangles interlaced Argent a<br />

lymphad sails furled Or in base an escutcheon <strong>of</strong> the third charged with a dragon rampant Gules.<br />

Crest: Upon a mount Vert a demi lion reguardant supporting a staff Proper flowing therefrom a banner Azure charged with two<br />

triangles interlaced Argent.<br />

JAMES <strong>of</strong> Reigate Castle. Extinct about 1720.<br />

As borne (SV1623) by Sir Roger James, (d.Mar 26, 1637), eldest son <strong>of</strong> Roger James <strong>of</strong> Upminster, Essex, son <strong>of</strong> Roger James, (d.1596), <strong>of</strong><br />

London and Upminster, 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> James van Haestricht <strong>of</strong> Gouda in Holland, who came to England during the time <strong>of</strong> Henry VIII and took the<br />

name <strong>of</strong> James. From the brass in Reigate Church to John James, (d.Nov 23, 1642), brother <strong>of</strong> Sir Roger. (SAC xxxii 71)<br />

JAMES Brigadier-General Alfred Henry Cotes James, DSO, MVO, JP, BA (Oxon), South Staffordshire Regiment, <strong>of</strong> Water House,<br />

later <strong>of</strong> Chevington, Bletchingley, (1873-1947), was eldest son <strong>of</strong> Alfred Bartlett James, <strong>of</strong> North Petherton and Bristol, {Somerset}, (1850-<br />

1902).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure a chevron paly <strong>of</strong> six Or and Argent between two lions passant in chief and a dolphin in base Or.<br />
