SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

STABLES John Stables, HEICS, (c.1743-95), Captain, Bengal Infantry, son <strong>of</strong> John Stables <strong>of</strong> Bongate, Appleby, Westmorland, was <strong>of</strong><br />

Addiscombe, in 1781 and also had a house at Sunning Hill. He was later <strong>of</strong> Park Hill and, in 1793, bought the Wonham estate from Lord<br />

Romney. In 1767 he obtained a grant <strong>of</strong> the following :<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules a bend engrailed Or between a mullet in chief and a stag’s head cabossed in base Argent.<br />

Crest: A castle on the middle tower St. George’s flag flying Proper. (AWL)<br />

STABLES Ashley Stables <strong>of</strong> South Lodge, Wimbledon Common, (b.1848), son <strong>of</strong> James Stables, JP, (1814-1901); and Captain Francis<br />

Hugh Anthony Stables, l/5 th Royal Gurkhas, <strong>of</strong> Inverugie, Haslemere, (b.1899), son <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Walter Howard Stables, MA (Cantab), Mus.B<br />

(Oxon), Vicar <strong>of</strong> Far Headingley, Leeds, {Yorkshire}, (1861-1906).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per pale Gules and Sable a pillar Or between two flaunches Argent on each a chaplet <strong>of</strong> oak Vert.<br />

Crest: Upon a rock a castle with two towers Proper surmounted by as many branches <strong>of</strong> oak fructed and in saltire Vert.<br />

Motto: Per ardua stabilis. (FD7)<br />

STACK Henry Montague Stack <strong>of</strong> Ramsdean, Shalford, (b.1863), 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> John Herbert Stack, (1828-92).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules a lion rampant Ermine.<br />

Crest: Out <strong>of</strong> a ducal coronet Or a naked arm embowed Proper holding a sword Argent gutté-de-sang pommel and hilt Vert.<br />

Motto: Honorabo me honorantes. (FD7)<br />

STAFFORD Sir Humphrey Stafford acquired Abinger from the time <strong>of</strong> Henry VI by marriage to Eleanor, aunt and coheir <strong>of</strong> Hugh<br />

Aylesbury, qv; their descendants, Sir William Stafford and Sir Humphrey Stafford, sold it 1551.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or a chevron Gules. (VCHS iii 131)<br />

STAFFORD The arms <strong>of</strong> Archbishop John Stafford, (d.1462), are in the Banqueting Hall <strong>of</strong> the Archbishop's Palace, Croydon.<br />

STAFFORD Duke <strong>of</strong> Buckingham. Hugh Stafford, Earl <strong>of</strong> Stafford, (d.1386), owned the manor <strong>of</strong> Chipstead which was forfeited<br />

on the attainder <strong>of</strong> Edward Stafford, Duke <strong>of</strong> Buckingham, (executed 1521). The family also held lands in Effingham. (VCHS iii 191, 322)<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or a chevron Gules.<br />

Crest: Out <strong>of</strong> a ducal coronet Gules a swan's head erect between two wings elevated Argent. (BGA)<br />

The arms, (those <strong>of</strong> Henry Stafford, 2 nd Duke <strong>of</strong> Buckingham, executed 1483), are on a corbel in the Banqueting Hall <strong>of</strong> the Archbishop's Palace,<br />

Croydon. (VCHS iv 210)<br />

STAHLSCHMIDT <strong>of</strong> Lambeth. *<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a mount Vert a man Proper vested Sable slashed Gules cap hose and trunk hose <strong>of</strong> the last the latter slashed <strong>of</strong> the<br />

fourth holding in the left hand upon an anvil an iron in the attitude <strong>of</strong> striking it with a hammer in the right also Proper on a canton <strong>of</strong> the fifth a<br />

cross humetté <strong>of</strong> the field a label upon a label for difference.<br />

Crest: A demi warrior couped at the thighs in armour an open helmet on the head face affronté in the right hand a battle axe all<br />

Proper differenced as in the arms.<br />

Motto: Deo inspirante Rege favente. (BGA)<br />

representation <strong>of</strong> London Stone Or between two seaxes blades upwards and outwards <strong>of</strong> the second hilted and pommelled a representation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Staines Bridge Gold .<br />

Crest: Upon the battlements <strong>of</strong> a tower Or a greyhound sejant Gules .<br />

STALLARD Lieutenant-Colonel Hamilton George Frampton Stallard, RAMC, <strong>of</strong> Redhearne, Churt, (b.1871), son <strong>of</strong> Major-General<br />

Samuel Stallard, RA, (1824-1902).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable a sword fesswise point to the dexter Or between three lions' heads erased <strong>of</strong> the last each gorged with a wreath <strong>of</strong> oak<br />

Vert.<br />

STANDEN <strong>of</strong> East Molesey.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a chief indented Azure a lion passant Or, in fess a mullet for difference.<br />
