WISE Major Lewis Lovatt Ayshford Wise, JP, <strong>of</strong> Clayton, Staffordshire, (b.1844), son <strong>of</strong> John Ayshford Wise, DL, JP, <strong>of</strong> Clayton,<br />

(1810-70), was also <strong>of</strong> Mayhurst, Maybury Hill, Woking. (BLG13)<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable three chevronels Ermine.<br />

Crests: 1, A mermaid Proper; 2, A demi lion rampant Gules gutté-d'eau holding in the dexter paw a mace Or. (BGA)<br />

WISE Fairbairn records the family <strong>of</strong> Wise <strong>of</strong> Hillbank, Forfar, and <strong>of</strong> Thornton, Beulah Hill, Upper Norwood, as bearing<br />

Crest: A demi Moor in armour Proper issuing out <strong>of</strong> the top <strong>of</strong> a tower Argent holding in his dexter hand a dart Azure plumed and<br />

barbed Or with the point downwards and in his sinister a Roman shield Proper.<br />

Burke records this crest, (blazoning the demi Moor as a demi negro, and the dart Argent) for Wise <strong>of</strong> Ludan and Hillbrook, Forfar, with<br />

The latter coat was the first matriculation, 1807, by Wise <strong>of</strong> Hillbank, the second in 1878, being: Per chevron Sable and Or in chief two<br />

<strong>of</strong> Richard Wither, a younger son <strong>of</strong> the Withers <strong>of</strong> Manydown Park, Hampshire. (Guillim, edit. 1660)<br />

WODEHOUSE Richard Lancelot Deane Wodehouse <strong>of</strong> Oakley, Merstham, (1892-1940), was son <strong>of</strong> Henry Ernest Wodehouse, CMG, Hong<br />

Kong CS, (1845-1929), and descended from Sir Armine Wodehouse 5 th Bart., (1714-77). Of the same family, General Sir Josceline Heneage<br />

Wodehouse, GCB, CMG, RA, <strong>of</strong> Dormans, Greenhill Road, Farnham, (1852-1930), was son <strong>of</strong> Vice-Admiral George Wodehouse, (1810-1900),<br />

and descended from John, 1 st Baron Wodehouse <strong>of</strong> Kimberley, (1741-1834); and Reginald Berkeley Wodehouse <strong>of</strong> Priory Lodge, Priory Lane,<br />

Roehampton, (b.1866), elder son <strong>of</strong> Colonel Killegrew Reginald Berkeley Wodehouse, 1 st Battalion HLI, (1843-1935), and descended from<br />

John, 2 nd Baron Wodehouse <strong>of</strong> Kimberley, (1771-1846).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable a chevron Or gutté de sang between three cinquefoils Ermine.<br />

Crest: A dexter arm couped and erect vested Argent and grasping a club in bend sinister Or.<br />
