SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

MITCHELL-THOMSON Baron Selsdon. Sir William Lowson Mitchell-Thomson, 2 nd Bart., PC, KBE, BA (Oxon), LL.B (Edinburgh),<br />

(1877-1938), MP for South Division <strong>of</strong> Croydon, 1923-32, was created Baron Selsdon <strong>of</strong> Croydon, 1932. The title is held by his grandson Sir<br />

Malcolm McEacharn Mitchell-Thomson, 3 rd Baron Selsdon.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per pale Argent and Gules a stag's head cabossed between three mascles all counterchanged.<br />

Crest: A hand couped Proper grasping a cross crosslet fitché in bend sinister Gules.<br />

Supporters: Two seahorses Proper crined Sable finned Or.<br />

MOIR Sir Ernest Ian Royds Moir, 3 rd Bart., BA (Cantab), <strong>of</strong> Three Gates, 174 Coombe Lane West, Kingston-upon-Thames,<br />

(b.1925), succeeded his father, Sir Arrol Moir, 2 nd Bart., on the latter's death, 1957.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a span <strong>of</strong> a bridge embattled and in perspective chequy Or and Azure between three Moors' heads couped Sable each<br />

banded <strong>of</strong> the second and third and distilling three drops <strong>of</strong> blood Proper.<br />

Crest: Upon the span <strong>of</strong> a bridge as in the arms a Moor's head affronté couped at the shoulders Sable banded Or and Azure collared<br />

chequy <strong>of</strong> the same.<br />

MOLESWORTH The Rev. Rennell Francis Wynn Molesworth, MA (Oxon), Rector <strong>of</strong> Washington, Co. Durham, (1827-1906), descended<br />

from Robert, 1 st Viscount Molesworth, (d.1725), had issue, amongst others, a 7 th son, Walter Henderson Molesworth, MIEES, MIME, MPhS, <strong>of</strong><br />

Holmwood, Ashtead, (1873-1952), who was father <strong>of</strong> Ernest Walter Molesworth <strong>of</strong> Upper Woodcote House, Birch Lane, Purley, (b.1911).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules an escutcheon Vair between eight cross crosslets in orle Or.<br />

Crest: A dexter arm embowed in armour Proper holding a cross crosslet Or.<br />

MOLESWORTH Sir Paul William Molesworth, 10 th Bart., MA (Cantab), (1821-89), who shared a common ancestry with the Viscounts<br />

MOLONY Charles Mills Molony, CB, <strong>of</strong> St. Catherine's Priory, Guildford, Colonel Commissary-General <strong>of</strong> Ordnance, (1836-1901), 7 th<br />

son <strong>of</strong> James Molony, DL, JP, <strong>of</strong> Kiltanon, Co. Clare, (1785-1874), was grandfather <strong>of</strong> Brigadier Norman Molony, <strong>of</strong> Yateley, Camberley,<br />

(b.1907). (IFR)<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure on the dexter side a quiver erect holding three arrows on the sinister a bow erect all Or.<br />

Crest: An arm in armour embowed holding a dagger erect all Proper.<br />

MOLONY Sir Thomas Francis Molony, 1 st Bart., PC, MA, LL.D (TCD), <strong>of</strong> Shanganagh, 1 The Drive, Wimbledon, (1865-1949), was<br />

Lord Chief Justice <strong>of</strong> Ireland, 1918-24.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules six arrows in saltire between two bows erect to dexter and sinister Or a chief Ermine.<br />

Crest: A dexter arm embowed in armour Proper charged with a fleur-de-lys Gules the hand in a gauntlet holding a sword <strong>of</strong> the<br />

first.<br />

MOLONY Adrian Charles Molony <strong>of</strong> Northland, Newdigate, (b.1894), son <strong>of</strong> the Rev. John Molony, BA, Rector <strong>of</strong> M<strong>of</strong>fat, Scotland,<br />

and barrister-at-law, (1854-1925).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Azure a quiver erect holding three arrows between two bows palewise all Or; 2 and 3, Gules two lions<br />

rampant supporting a staff all Argent.<br />

Crest: An arm vambraced embowed the hand gaunteleted grasping a short sword all Proper the forearm charged with a trefoil<br />

slipped Azure.<br />

Motto: In Domino et non in arcu meo sperabo. (FD7)<br />

MOLYNEUX [MORE MOLYNEUX] <strong>of</strong> Loseley Park in Artington, [St Nicholas, Guildford], from 1689.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure a cross moline Or pierced lozengwise, * quartering More <strong>of</strong> Loseley, qv.<br />

Crest: A chapeau Gules turned up Ermine adorned with a plume <strong>of</strong> peacock feathers Proper. (Brayley i 418)<br />

Descended from Sir Thomas Molyneux, (d.1719), who married Margaret, sister and heir <strong>of</strong> Robert More, (d.1689), <strong>of</strong> Loseley. On the death, in<br />

1802, <strong>of</strong> Jane Molyneux, the estate passed to James More Molyneux, illegitimate son <strong>of</strong> the Thomas More Molyneux who died in 1776. The last<br />

heir male, William More Molyneux, died in 1907, and was succeeded by his daughter Gwendoline, whose 2 nd husband, Brigadier-General<br />

Francis Cecil Longbourne took the name <strong>of</strong> More-Molyneux in 1928, and has issue by her James Robert More-Molyneux. **<br />

As borne (SV1623) by Richard Monckton <strong>of</strong> Egham, son <strong>of</strong> William Monckton <strong>of</strong> Grafton, Yorkshire West Riding, son <strong>of</strong> William Monckton <strong>of</strong><br />

Cavell, Yorkshire.<br />
