PHYTHIAN-ADAMS The Rev. William John Telia Phythian Phythian-Adams, DSO, MC, MA, DD (Oxon), <strong>of</strong> 16 Manor Way, Onslow<br />

Village, Guildford, (1888-1967), was younger son <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Edward Charles Adams, MA (Oxon), (1827-1912), who assumed the surname<br />

Phythian-Adams, 1902. He served with distinction in World War I as Lieutenant-Colonel, 22 nd Fusiliers. A distinguished archaeologist, he was<br />

Vicar <strong>of</strong> Millom, Cumberland, 1927-31, Bishop's Messenger in the Diocese <strong>of</strong> Carlisle, 1931-32, and Canon Residentiary <strong>of</strong> Carlisle, 1932-58;<br />

he was Chaplain to George V, King Edward VIII, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per chevron Gules and Azure in chief two leopards' heads affronté couped at the neck Or spotted Sable and in base a stag's<br />

head cabossed <strong>of</strong> the third.<br />

Crest: An owl Or holding in the dexter claw a cross crosslet fitché Sable.<br />

PICARD <strong>of</strong> Piccards in Artington [St Nicholas, Guildford].<br />

This coat was borne by Roger Picard, from the time <strong>of</strong> Henry III, and (with a label <strong>of</strong> five points Gules) by John Picard, from the time <strong>of</strong> Edward<br />

Borne by Edward Rowland Pickering <strong>of</strong> Old Lodge, son <strong>of</strong> Edward Lake Pickering <strong>of</strong> the Exchequer Office, Temple, by Mary his wife, daughter<br />

and heir <strong>of</strong> William Umfreville.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Ermine a lion rampant Azure armed Gules crowned Or.<br />

PICKERSGILL post PICKERSGILL-CUNLIFFE John Pickersgill <strong>of</strong> Netherne House, also <strong>of</strong> Tavistock Square, London, (1785-1865),<br />

married, 1810, Sophia, (d.1874), youngest daughter <strong>of</strong> John Cunliffe <strong>of</strong> High House, Addingham, Yorkshire, and had a 2 nd son John Cunliffe<br />

Pickersgill-Cunliffe <strong>of</strong> Hooley, Coulsdon, (1819-73), who was father <strong>of</strong>, amongst others, John Cunliffe Pickersgill-Cunliffe, BA, <strong>of</strong> Coulsdon,<br />

(1850-80), and Charles Pickersgill-Cunliffe <strong>of</strong> Beacon Hill Park, Hindhead, (1863-1905).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: (<strong>of</strong> Pickersgill) Or a fess indented Sable between three magpies Proper a bordure nebuly <strong>of</strong> the second.<br />

Farnham, (b.1849), eldest son <strong>of</strong> Henry Pidcock, DL, JP, <strong>of</strong> Oakfield, Worcestershire.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per pale Sable and Gules a pied cock per fess Or and Argent between three acorns <strong>of</strong> the third.<br />

Crest: A bar-shot Proper thereon a griffin segreant Sable holding with its claws a grenade fired also Proper.<br />

William Piercy <strong>of</strong> Kexby, Yorkshire.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or on a fess Gules between three doves wings expanded Sable as many mullets pierced Or all between two flaunches <strong>of</strong> the<br />

second.<br />

Crest: A demi lion couped Vert collared Or holding in the dexter paw a tilting spear bendwise point downwards Proper and resting<br />

the Sinister paw on a shield Sable charged with a dove close Gold.<br />

PIERREPONT Duke <strong>of</strong> Kingston-upon-Hull. In 1761 Evelyn Pierrepont, Duke <strong>of</strong> Kingston, (1711-73), acquired land at<br />

Tankersford, Frensham, and built Pierrepont Lodge there. (VCHS ii 613)<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent semé <strong>of</strong> cinquefoils Gules a lion rampant Sable.<br />

Crests: 1, A lion Sable between two wings erect Argent; 2, A fox passant Proper.<br />
