SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

SACKVILLE Earl <strong>of</strong> Dorset. Thomas Sackville, Baron <strong>of</strong> Buckhurst and Earl <strong>of</strong> Dorset, (d.1608), acquired the manor <strong>of</strong><br />

Foyle in Oxted, which was sold, 1615, by his grandson Richard, Earl <strong>of</strong> Dorset, (1589-1624), who acquired the manor <strong>of</strong> Reigate.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly Or and Gules a bend Vair.<br />

Crest: Out <strong>of</strong> a coronet composed <strong>of</strong> eight fleurs-de-lys Or an estoile <strong>of</strong> eight points Argent.<br />

SADLEIR Franc Richard Sadleir, BA (Oxon), <strong>of</strong> 8 Bective Road, Putney, (b.1944), son <strong>of</strong> Major Franc Granby Sadleir, MBE, MC, The<br />

Devonshire Regiment, (1917-44), and descended from Colonel Thomas Sadlier <strong>of</strong> Sopwell Hall, Co. Tipperary, (d. c.1680), 4 th son <strong>of</strong> Richard<br />

Sadleir <strong>of</strong> Hopwell, Hertfordshire, (d.1624).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1, Or a lion rampant per fess Azure and Gules (Sadleir); 2, Per chevron Or and Gules two lions combatant in chief<br />

St. CLAIR Colonel James Pattison St. Clair, RA, <strong>of</strong> Felcourt Lodge, (1780-1867), descended from the 10 th Lord Sinclair, was<br />

grandfather <strong>of</strong> Colonel James Latimer Crawshay St. Clair, CB, CMC, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, <strong>of</strong> The Beacon Cottage, Dormansland<br />

and <strong>of</strong> Staverton Court, Gloucestershire, (1850-1940), who was father <strong>of</strong> Major William Farhill St. Clair, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, <strong>of</strong><br />

St. CLAIR-ERSKINE formerly WEDDERBURN Earl <strong>of</strong> Rosslyn, Baron Loughborough. Alexander Wedderburn, 1 st Earl <strong>of</strong><br />

Rosslyn, (1733-1805), Lord High Chancellor, 1793-1801, was created Baron Loughborough <strong>of</strong> Loughborough, <strong>Surrey</strong>, 1795. * The titles<br />

devolved by special limitation to his nephew General Sir James St. Clair-Erskine, 6 th Bart., KGCB, 2 nd Earl <strong>of</strong> Rosslyn and Baron<br />

Loughborough, (1762-1837), and are now held by his descendant Sir Peter St. Clair-Erskine, 7 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Rosslyn, (b.1958).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1, Argent a cross engrailed Sable (St Clair); 2, Argent a pale Sable (Erskine); 3, Azure a bend between six cross<br />

crosslets fitché Or (Mar); 4, Argent on a chevron Gules between three roses <strong>of</strong> the last barbed Vert a fleur-de-lys <strong>of</strong> the field for difference<br />

(Wedderburn).<br />

Crests: 1, A demi phoenix in flames Proper and over it the device 'Rinasco piu glorioso'; 2, An eagle's head erased Proper with the<br />

words 'Illaeso lumine solem' (Wedderburn).<br />

Supporters: Dexter, An eagle wings inverted Proper gorged with a collar Argent thereon a fleur-de-lys Gules; Sinister. A griffin wings<br />

* GEC points out that the fiction <strong>of</strong> Loughborough in <strong>Surrey</strong> was adopted to distinguish the barony from that <strong>of</strong> Loughborough <strong>of</strong><br />

Loughborough, Leicestershire, which had been conferred on Alexander Wedderburn in 1780.<br />

St. CLARE or St. CLERE Sir Philip St. Clare or St. Clere, (d.1408), acquired the manor <strong>of</strong> Burstow as a result <strong>of</strong> his marriage to<br />

Margaret, daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> Sir Nicholas de Loveyne. Their son Thomas St. Clere, (dspm 1435) left a 2 nd daughter and coheir Eleanor who<br />

carried Burstow and other lands to her husband John Gage, (d.1475), qv.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure the sun in splendour Or. (VCHS iii 177, iv 294-5)<br />

St. DAVID'S See <strong>of</strong>. The arms <strong>of</strong> the See <strong>of</strong> St. David's impaling those <strong>of</strong> Archbishop William Laud, qv, who was Bishop <strong>of</strong><br />

St. David's, 1621-6, are on a stall in the Chapel <strong>of</strong> the Archbishop's Palace, Croydon. (VCHS iv 212)<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable on a cross Or five cinquefoils <strong>of</strong> the field. (WEC)<br />

St. GEORGE Sir John St. George, 5 th Bart., (1851-1938), was <strong>of</strong> Harcourt, Sutton.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a chief Azure over all a lion rampant Gules ducally crowned Or armed and langued <strong>of</strong> the second a crescent for<br />

difference.<br />

Crest: A demi lion rampant Gules ducally crowned Or armed and langued Azure.<br />

St. GEORGE Dean and Chapter <strong>of</strong> Windsor. The advowson <strong>of</strong> Betchworth was granted to the Dean and Chapter <strong>of</strong> St. George,<br />

Windsor, 1 Edward VI. {1547/8} The Dean and Chapter held the manor <strong>of</strong> Windlesham in 1650.<br />
