NORTH <strong>of</strong> Wroxton Abbey, Oxfordshire, and now, (1938), <strong>of</strong> Waldershare Park, {Nr. Dover}, Kent. Baron North <strong>of</strong> Guildford, Sep<br />

27, 1683. Baron North <strong>of</strong> Kirtling by inheritance, (see North <strong>of</strong> Kirtling Towers 1), from 1734 to 1802, when this barony fell into abeyance, from<br />

which it emerged in 1841 in favour <strong>of</strong> Susan, daughter and ultimate sole heir <strong>of</strong> George North, 3 rd Earl <strong>of</strong> Guildford, (see North <strong>of</strong> Kirtling<br />

Towers 2). Earl <strong>of</strong> Guildford, Apr 8, 1752. *<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure a lion passant Or between three fleur-de-lys Argent.<br />

Crest: A dragon head erased Sable ducally gorged and chained Or.<br />

Supporters: Two English mastiffs Proper.<br />

Descended from Sir Francis North, d. 1685, Chief Justice <strong>of</strong> the Common Pleas and first Baron North <strong>of</strong> Guildford, 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Dudley North, 4 th<br />

Baron North <strong>of</strong> Kirtling. Frederick North, KG, (d.1792), 2 nd Earl <strong>of</strong> Guildford, but best known as 'Lord North', was Premier <strong>of</strong> England at the<br />

time <strong>of</strong> the American War <strong>of</strong> Independence.<br />

* The present holder <strong>of</strong> the title is Edward Francis, 9 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Guildford, DL, JP, (b.1933).<br />

NORTH Richard Ford North <strong>of</strong> Glemham Lodge, West Norwood, (1804-88), was father <strong>of</strong> Edward Ford North <strong>of</strong> Comeragh Court,<br />

Hook Heath, {Woking}, (1842-1927) and grandfather <strong>of</strong> Stephen Thomas Ford North <strong>of</strong> Comeragh Court, (1881-1964).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly Or and Azure in the first quarter a crescent <strong>of</strong> the second.<br />

Crest: A lion passant Proper langued Gules.<br />

NORTH Lieutenant-Colonel Oliver Henry North, DSO, JP, FSA, Lancashire Fusiliers, at one time <strong>of</strong> Lockner, Chilworth, (1874-<br />

1954), was 5 th son <strong>of</strong> North North, DL, JP, <strong>of</strong> Newton Hall, Lancashire, (1824-1910).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Per pale Azure and Sable a lion passant between in chief two fleurs-de-lys and in base a quatrefoil Or<br />

(North); 2 and 3, Quarterly, i and iv, Argent a bend wavy Sable, ii and iii, Or a fleur-de-lys Azure (Burton).<br />

Crest: A dragon's head erased Sable gutté-d'Or and collared and chained Or in front there<strong>of</strong> three mascles interlaced fesswise also<br />

Thomas Northey <strong>of</strong> London, (who recorded his <strong>Arms</strong> at the London Visitation 1634), son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Northey <strong>of</strong> Corsham, Wiltshire, son <strong>of</strong><br />

William Northey <strong>of</strong> Edington, Wiltshire.<br />

The present representative <strong>of</strong> the family is Lieutenant-Colonel Edward George Vernon Northey, KRRC, <strong>of</strong> Maidford, Norton, Malmesbury,<br />

Wiltshire, (b.1910), whose father Major-General Sir Edward Northey, GCMG, CB, JP, (1868-1953), left Woodcote House.<br />

NORTON <strong>of</strong> Wonersh House. Baron Grantley <strong>of</strong> Markenfield, Apr 9, 1782. Descended from Fletcher Norton, (d.Jan 1, 1789),<br />

Baron Grantley, Attorney General and Speaker <strong>of</strong> the House <strong>of</strong> Commons, * son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Norton <strong>of</strong> Grantley, Yorkshire, son <strong>of</strong> Thomas<br />

Norton <strong>of</strong> Grantley, 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Welbury Norton <strong>of</strong> Sawley, Yorkshire, great-grandson <strong>of</strong> Richard Norton <strong>of</strong> Norton, Sheriff <strong>of</strong> Yorkshire in 1568.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure a maunch Ermine, over all a bend Gules.<br />

Crest: A Moor head front-faced couped at the shoulders Proper, wreathed round the temples with ivy and round the neck with a<br />

torse Argent and Azure.<br />

Supporters: A lion Argent gorged with a ducal coronet Or and pendant therefrom by a riband Gules an escutcheon <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Arms</strong> <strong>of</strong> Norton.<br />

A griffin Argent gorged and with an escutcheon pendant as the lion.<br />

* His grandson Fletcher Norton, 3 rd Baron Grantley, (1798-1875), High Steward <strong>of</strong> Guildford, bought Guildford Castle, c.1842; his great-nephew<br />

John Richard Brinsley Norton, 5 th Baron Grantley, (1855-1943), sold the castle to Guildford Corporation, 1886. The 3 rd Baron's brother the Hon.<br />

George Chappell Norton, (1800-75), a metropolitan police-magistrate, was also Recorder <strong>of</strong> Guildford. (BP105; VCHS iii 559)<br />
